Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana: 26.57 Lakh Houses Completed in FY 2025-26
The Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G) has made significant strides, with 32.47 lakh houses approved and 26.57 lakh completed during the fiscal year 2025-26. This initiative represents a crucial step toward achieving the national target of providing affordable housing to the rural population of India.
As of August 3, 2026, a total of 4.18 crore houses have been assigned to various States and Union Territories under PMAY-G. Out of these, 3.91 crore houses have received approval, and 3.12 crore are already built, leaving 79 lakh homes currently under construction. The program emphasizes a beneficiary-led construction approach, allowing individuals to build their houses with available support from the government.
Quality Housing Tailored to Local Needs
Under PMAY-G, beneficiaries can choose from a range of house designs suited to their local environment and utilize regionally appropriate materials and technologies. To assist with building, state governments may provide construction materials at competitive rates. The Rural Development Ministry has also published a resource titled “PAHAL,” featuring various rural housing types, accessible via the AwaasApp.
To enhance the quality of home construction, the Government of India has initiated the Rural Mason Training (RMT) Program, aiming to equip enough masons for effective rural housing development. Multiple strategies have been implemented to ensure that housing construction progresses promptly across States and Union Territories. These include timely allocation of targets, regular progress reviews, and comprehensive monitoring through an online dashboard.
Additional Amenities and Support
Beneficiaries of PMAY-G also gain access to vital services such as piped drinking water through collaborations with the Jal Jeevan Mission, as well as electricity connections facilitated by various government schemes. Furthermore, cooking gas connections are provided under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana to enhance living conditions in these new homes.
Significantly, the scheme reserves up to 5% of its targets for special projects aimed at rehabilitating families adversely affected by natural disasters. A minimum of 60% of the target is allocated to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe households, ensuring that these vulnerable communities receive adequate housing support.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan, the government is also committed to offering substantial benefits to Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups by providing durable housing with essential amenities.
In terms of funding, resources are distributed to States and UTs, with each being treated as a separate entity. Over the last two financial years, there has been a notable expenditure of ₹528.04 crore on special projects, and the Aspirational Districts initiative alone has seen spending of ₹17,281.58 crore. In FY 2024-25 and FY 2025-26, a total of ₹2,465.38 crore was channelled for the housing needs of PVTG beneficiaries, marking significant government investment in rural housing.
Overall, PMAY-G continues to play a pivotal role in transforming housing access for millions in rural India, contributing not just to shelter but also to enhanced livelihoods and community development.
