GeM Celebrates Ten Years of Revolutionizing Public Procurement
The Government e Marketplace (GeM) is set to celebrate a significant milestone as it marks ten years of operation on August 9, 2026. Over the past decade, GeM has transformed public procurement in India, leveraging technology, transparency, and good governance. With a remarkable cumulative Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) exceeding ₹20 lakh crore, GeM has facilitated over 3.78 crore orders, solidifying its essential role in the nation’s procurement landscape.
Growth in Performance and Participation
GeM’s annual GMV has witnessed impressive growth, skyrocketing from ₹422 crore in FY 2016–17 to over ₹5 lakh crore in both FY 2024–25 and FY 2025–26. In just the first four months of FY 2026–27, the platform achieved a stellar GMV of ₹1,47,888 crore. While GeM took more than eight years to reach its first ₹10 lakh crore in cumulative GMV, it achieved the next ₹10 lakh crore milestone in under two years, indicating a rapid adoption by users across the public procurement sector.
A Diverse User Base
The platform’s user base has expanded significantly. The number of sellers with completed profiles rose dramatically from 3,339 to 25.45 lakh, and primary buyer organizations grew from 1,707 to 1.37 lakh. Furthermore, micro and small enterprises (MSEs) registered on the platform surged from 2,424 to 12.25 lakh, highlighting GeM’s commitment to inclusivity in public procurement.
Empowering Small Enterprises and Women
MSEs have played a pivotal role in this growth, fulfilling orders worth over ₹9.07 lakh crore, which accounts for 45.6 percent of the platform’s total GMV. Additionally, more than 2.24 lakh women-led MSEs have processed over 50 lakh orders valued at over ₹99,147 crore, while 42,242 startups have landed orders amounting to ₹65,633 crore through GeM.
Delivering Cost Efficiency
A study conducted by IIT Delhi, covering FY 2023–24 to FY 2025–26, estimated a monetised benefit of ₹86,571.69 crore from price and process efficiencies within GeM, resulting in net social savings of ₹1,76,411.46 crore. The research found that GeM offered lower prices for 74.3 percent of compared items, leading to a weighted savings of 13.6 percent when benchmarked against other e-marketplaces. Previous assessments from the Economic Survey 2021–22 have confirmed that GeM consistently drives procurement savings.
Enhancing User Experience
To simplify transactions, GeM has rolled out several seller-friendly initiatives. Transaction charges have been lowered from 0.50 percent to 0.30 percent, and orders up to ₹10 lakh are now exempt from transaction fees. Consequently, an impressive 97 percent of all orders come with no transaction charges. Additionally, the maximum transaction fee is capped at ₹3 lakh, and vendor assessment fees have been slashed by up to 92 percent.
Positive Feedback from Users
An Axis My India survey revealed that 92 percent of surveyed buyers expressed satisfaction with their experience on GeM. On the seller side, 67 percent reported increased business volumes, while 78 percent indicated they would continue using the platform.
The Future of Public Procurement
GeM is transforming the public procurement cycle through extensive digitization, employing artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to identify potential cartelization and collusion. As a fully digital platform, it generates comprehensive transactional data that policymakers can utilize to enhance public expenditure monitoring and address inefficiencies. CEO Mihir Kumar emphasized that GeM has shifted public procurement to a transparent marketplace, where capability is the key to success. He noted that the next decade will be characterized by deeper AI integration, aiming for better public value and equitable opportunities for all enterprises.
Looking ahead, GeM is poised to leverage data-driven technologies to foster fair competition, augment public spending efficiency, and cultivate a procurement ecosystem that prioritizes simplicity, speed, transparency, and value for both buyers and sellers, aligning with the vision of Viksit Bharat.
