TRAI Hosts Seminar on Universal and Meaningful Connectivity on World Telecom Day

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) marked World Telecom and Information Society Day (WTISD) at its New Delhi headquarters, emphasizing the theme of “Universal and Meaningful Connectivity” (UMC). This year’s celebration highlighted the importance of ensuring equitable access to communication services, enabling individuals and communities to engage fully in the digital economy. The event featured key addresses from prominent figures, including the Minister of Communications, who underscored the role of telecommunications in bridging the digital divide and fostering socio-economic development.
Inauguration and Keynote Address
The event commenced with an inaugural address by Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, the Honโble Minister of Communications. He stressed the significance of UMC in addressing the digital divide that persists in various regions of India. The Minister articulated that telecommunications serve as the backbone of the nation’s digital transformation, facilitating connectivity and access to information. He acknowledged TRAI’s pivotal role in guiding the telecom sector towards achieving these goals. Scindia outlined six essential pillars of UMC: affordability, availability, access, quality of service, online safety and security, and technology. He also noted the increasing relevance of satellite-based telecommunications, particularly in reaching remote and underserved areas, which are crucial for achieving universal connectivity.
TRAI’s Role in Shaping Connectivity
Shri Anil Kumar Lahoti, Chairman of TRAI, delivered the Welcome Address, highlighting the authority’s instrumental role in transforming the telecom landscape in India. He reflected on TRAI’s significant interventions and reforms that have enhanced coverage and service delivery in the sector. Lahoti emphasized TRAI’s commitment to improving the Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) and ensuring robust consumer protection mechanisms. His remarks underscored the authority’s ongoing efforts to foster an environment conducive to rapid development and innovation in telecommunications.
Global Perspectives on Technology and Innovation
The event featured insights from distinguished speakers, including Shri Deepak Mishra, Director and Chief Executive of the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), and Ms. Pranita Upadhaya, Head of the ITU Area Office and Innovation Centre for South Asia. They discussed global trends in technology, including the leading countries in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the significance of data-driven decision-making. Their presentations highlighted the strategic role of ITU tools in promoting innovation and entrepreneurship. They also addressed the growing influence of South Asia Innovation Centres, which are crucial for fostering technological collaboration and policy innovation in the region.
