The Witcher 4 Release Delayed Until 2027

CD Projekt Red has announced that the highly anticipated game, The Witcher 4, is unlikely to be released before 2027. During the company’s recent earnings call, executives confirmed that the game will not meet the initial target of launching by the end of 2026. While a first-look trailer was unveiled at The Game Awards 2024, details regarding supported platforms and a specific launch timeline remain unconfirmed.

CD Projekt Red’s Timeline Update

In a recent update, CD Projekt Red indicated that fans may need to wait longer than expected for The Witcher 4. CFO Piotr Nielubowicz stated during the FY 2024 earnings conference that the studio will not announce a precise release date in the near future. He emphasized that the game will not be launched within the timeframe of the current incentive program, which concludes on December 31, 2026.

This announcement suggests that a 2026 release is highly unlikely, pushing the earliest possible launch window to 2027. However, there is a possibility that development delays could push the release even further, potentially into 2028. This timeline aligns with reports indicating that next-generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft are expected to debut around the same period, with a new Xbox console possibly launching in 2027.

Cross-Generation Potential

Given the extended timeline, The Witcher 4 may be developed as a cross-generation title. This means it could be available on both current-generation and next-generation consoles, as well as PC. The game officially entered full-scale production in November 2024, marking a significant step forward in its development.

The Witcher 4 was first announced in March 2022 under the working title Project Polaris. CD Projekt Red described the game as the beginning of a new saga, intended to be the first installment in a new trilogy. The game is being developed using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5, which promises to enhance the visual and immersive experience for players.

New Protagonist and Storyline

In a notable shift for the series, The Witcher 4 will feature Ciri as the main protagonist, while Geralt of Rivia will take a supporting role. The game is described as a single-player, open-world RPG set in a dark-fantasy universe. Players will assume the role of Ciri, a skilled monster slayer, embarking on a perilous journey through a richly crafted world. The official description highlights the ambition behind The Witcher 4, aiming to deliver the most immersive open-world experience in the franchise’s history. As fans eagerly await further updates, CD Projekt Red’s commitment to quality and innovation remains a focal point for the development team.
