The Hundred Prepares for Historic Auction Announcement
The Hundred is set to revolutionize its player selection process with its inaugural player auction scheduled for March 2026. This significant change comes ahead of the tournament’s sixth season and aims to enhance competitiveness and flexibility in team formations for both men’s and women’s competitions. Alongside the auction, the introduction of multi-year contracts is expected to further elevate the standard of play and entertainment value.
New Auction System and Team Composition
The upcoming player auction will allow teams to have between 16 and 18 players, including a maximum of four overseas cricketers. This new structure introduces a salary cap and a salary collar, which mandates a minimum spending amount for each team. Unlike previous seasons, where fixed salary tiers were the norm, the auction will feature open bidding, giving teams more freedom in player acquisition. The men’s competition will see a substantial increase in the salary pot, rising by 45% to GBP 2.05 million per team, while the women’s competition will experience a remarkable 100% increase to GBP 880,000. This means that the lowest-paid women players will now earn a base salary of GBP 15,000, reflecting a 50% rise.
Teams will have the opportunity to make pre-auction signings from mid-November to the end of January. Each team can secure up to four players before the auction, with three being direct signings, including centrally contracted England or overseas players. The fourth player must be a retention from the previous season. Additionally, teams can sign up to two England centrally contracted players and two overseas players prior to the auction, although the “right to match” rule will not be applicable for this season.
Financial Adjustments and Salary Deductions
To accommodate the new pre-auction signings, specific amounts will be deducted from each team’s salary pot. For the men’s competition, deductions will range from GBP 350,000 for one player to GBP 950,000 for four players. In the women’s competition, the deductions will vary between GBP 130,000 and GBP 360,000. These financial adjustments are designed to ensure that teams remain competitive while adhering to the new salary structures.
The introduction of the auction and the accompanying financial changes have been approved by The Hundred Board after thorough consultations with representatives from all eight teams, the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA), and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). This collaborative effort aims to create a more balanced and competitive environment in the tournament.
Wildcard Draft and Future Prospects
The Wildcard Draft will continue to play a crucial role in The Hundred, allowing teams to reward outstanding domestic performers with final squad spots in June. This mechanism ensures that local talent has a pathway to participate in the tournament, enhancing the overall quality of cricket on display.
Managing Director Vikram Banerjee expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming changes, stating, “This is a hugely exciting time for The Hundred. These changes will help us make the competition even better, ensuring we get the best players in the world and improving the standard of cricket and level of entertainment further again.” The sixth edition of The Hundred is anticipated to commence in July, promising an exciting season ahead for fans and players alike.
