Telecom Giants Race to Launch Caller Name Feature

The Department of Telecom (DoT) has set a deadline for Indiaโs leading telecom operators to finalize inter-operator trials for the new Caller Name Presentation (CNAP) feature by this Friday. This innovative technology, designed to enhance caller identification, will only be available on 4G and 5G smartphones. Airtel and Vi are collaborating with Nokia for their implementation, while Jio is developing its own CNAP technology.
Deadline Looms for CNAP Trials
According to a report by Moneycontrol, the DoT has mandated that Airtel, Vi, and Jio submit their findings from the inter-operator CNAP trials by April 18. Notably, Vi has not yet commenced its inter-operator testing for this feature. Jio, having developed its proprietary CNAP technology, is expected to have a smoother rollout due to its exclusive focus on 4G and 5G networks.
In contrast, both Airtel and Vi will only offer the CNAP feature to customers using 4G and 5G smartphones. While these operators also cater to 2G users, their existing infrastructure does not support CNAP technology, which may necessitate significant investment to upgrade. This limitation could hinder the feature’s accessibility for a portion of their customer base.
Impact on Caller Identification
Once launched, the CNAP feature is anticipated to significantly reduce reliance on third-party caller identification applications such as Truecaller and Hiya. The CNAP system will display the name associated with incoming calls, sourced directly from the telecom operator’s customer database. This enhancement aims to provide users with clearer identification of callers, thereby addressing the growing issue of unwanted telemarketing, spam, and scam calls.
While the exact timeline for the CNAP rollout remains unclear, the feature is poised to transform how users identify incoming calls. By displaying caller names, it promises to improve user experience and security in telecommunications across the country.
Future of Caller Identification in India
The introduction of CNAP is a significant step forward in modernizing India’s telecom infrastructure. As the trials conclude and operators prepare for the launch, the focus will be on ensuring that the technology is seamlessly integrated into existing networks. The DoT’s push for this feature reflects a broader commitment to enhancing customer service and reducing the prevalence of nuisance calls.
As telecom operators gear up for this technological shift, users can look forward to a more reliable and informative calling experience. The successful implementation of CNAP could set a precedent for future innovations in the Indian telecom sector, paving the way for more advanced features that prioritize user safety and convenience.
