South Africa’s 489 Runs Leave India on the Back Foot After Grueling Day in Guwahati

South Africa seized the initiative in the second Test against India in Guwahati, finishing their first innings with a formidable total of 489 runs. Key contributions came from Senuran Muthusamy, who celebrated his maiden Test century with a score of 109, and Marco Jansen, who aggressively added 93 runs. Despite a promising start, India faced challenges as they ended the day at nine runs without loss before play was halted due to bad light.

The South African batting lineup showcased resilience, particularly in the lower order, where the last four batsmen collectively contributed 243 runs. Muthusamy and Kyle Verreynne formed a solid partnership, adding 88 runs for the seventh wicket. Jansen’s explosive batting style was on full display as he struck seven sixes, setting a record for the most sixes by an overseas player in a Test innings in India. This surpassed the previous record held by legends Viv Richards and Matthew Hayden, who each hit six sixes in their respective innings. South Africa’s innings lasted 151.1 overs, with all five Indian bowlers bowling at least 25 overs, marking a rare occurrence in Test cricket.

India’s Bowling Struggles

India’s bowling attack faced difficulties on a pitch that offered little assistance. Stand-in captain Rishabh Pant struggled to implement effective strategies, as the pitch at Barsapara Stadium showed no signs of wear. Kuldeep Yadav was the standout bowler for India, taking four wickets for 115 runs, while Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar’s performances raised concerns. Jadeja managed two wickets for 94 runs, while Sundar went wicketless, conceding 58 runs. The lack of turn and bounce from the pitch hindered their effectiveness, allowing South African batsmen to defend comfortably against their deliveries.

Looking Ahead

As India prepares to bat in their first innings, they face the daunting task of chasing down South Africa’s substantial total. Historically, no visiting team has lost a Test match in India after scoring as many as 489 runs in the first innings. India will need to capitalize on the batting-friendly conditions to stay competitive in the match. The last time a team made over 450 runs in India and still lost was in 2016, highlighting the challenge ahead for the home side. With the pitch expected to remain firm for the next couple of days, Indian fans will be hoping for a turnaround in their team’s fortunes as they aim to level the series.
