Soldiers Required to Excel in Combat Skills and Maintain Mental Stability

โTo address the evolving challenges of modern warfare, soldiers must not only master combat skills but also cultivate mental resilience and spiritual strength,โ stated Defense Minister Rajnath Singh during an event at the Brahma Kumaris Headquarters in Mount Abu, Rajasthan, on April 21, 2025. He highlighted the necessity for soldiers to be equipped for battles that extend beyond the physical realm, emphasizing the importance of mental fortitude in safeguarding the nation.
Importance of Mental Strength in Warfare
During his address, Rajnath Singh underscored that while physical prowess is essential for soldiers, mental strength is equally critical. He acknowledged the harsh conditions under which soldiers operate, stating that their ability to overcome challenges stems from a robust inner self. The Defense Minister pointed out that prolonged exposure to stress and uncertainty can adversely affect mental health, making it imperative to strengthen the inner self. He praised the Brahma Kumarisโ initiative aimed at enhancing the mental well-being of soldiers, describing it as a commendable effort in this regard.
The campaign, which focuses on mental health, aligns with the current global geopolitical landscape. Singh remarked that the theme of the campaign, โSelf-Empowerment – Through Inner Awakening,โ is particularly relevant today. He emphasized that practices such as meditation, yoga, and positive thinking can empower soldiers mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. He articulated that self-transformation is foundational for national transformation, suggesting that India can lead by example in promoting the protection of both inner selves and national borders.
Spirituality and Yoga as Tools for Resilience
Rajnath Singh further elaborated on the role of spirituality and yoga, deeply rooted in Indian culture, as vital tools for enhancing mental well-being. He asserted that these practices can effectively address stress, anxiety, and emotional challenges faced by security personnel. A strong and alert security force, he noted, serves as a beacon of hope for the nation, capable of weathering any storm with resolve.
The Defense Minister acknowledged the efforts of the Brahma Kumarisโ Security Service Wing in supporting security forces through various programs, including residential, field, and online initiatives. These efforts aim to equip personnel with the necessary skills to manage stress and maintain mental health, thereby ensuring a more resilient defense force.
Collaboration for Better Mental Health
As part of the event, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare, Ministry of Defence, and the Headquarters of the Security Service Wing, Rajyoga Education and Research Foundation of Brahma Kumaris. This agreement aims to guide beneficiaries of the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) toward improved mental health outcomes while reducing reliance on medication.
The collaboration signifies a commitment to enhancing the mental health of ex-servicemen, recognizing the importance of mental well-being in overall health. By fostering a supportive environment, the initiative seeks to empower veterans and their families, ensuring they receive the necessary resources to navigate the challenges they face post-service.
