SBI Shares Surge as Analysts Anticipate Robust Credit Cycle; Will the Stock Maintain Its Momentum in 2026?

State Bank of India (SBI) is experiencing a remarkable surge in its stock performance, with shares climbing nearly 25% in 2025. This growth positions SBI as a leader among major private-sector banks in the Nifty index, marking a significant turnaround after a modest rise in previous years. Analysts attribute this positive momentum to a favorable earnings outlook, improved asset quality, and expectations of steady credit growth, suggesting that SBI is set for its most impressive performance in two years.

The current demand for credit remains robust, bolstered by a recent reduction in Goods and Services Tax (GST), which is anticipated to further stimulate consumption. The Reserve Bank of India projects a GDP growth of 6.8% for FY26 and 6.6% for FY27, creating a supportive environment for banks. Analysts forecast systemic loan growth of 11-12% in the latter half of FY26. SBI’s strong structural advantages are evident, with net interest margins expanding by 7 basis points in the September quarter, thanks to effective deposit repricing and liability management. The bank’s Current Account and Savings Account (CASA) ratio stands at 36.9%, with a market share exceeding 22% in total deposits and around 23% in CASA deposits. This solid foundation positions SBI to outpace the broader industry while maintaining a low-cost deposit base.

Analysts Remain Bullish on SBI

Analysts express optimism about SBI’s future performance, highlighting its substantial loan book of Rs 43 lakh crore, which accounts for nearly 23-24% of India’s total loans. With a credit cost of just 50 basis points, SBI is projected to grow at a rate of 12-14%. Parag Thakkar from Fort Capital notes that the stock remains reasonably priced, estimating SBI’s earnings per share for FY27 at Rs 85 and a book value of Rs 585. He suggests that a target price of Rs 1,150 within a year is plausible. Domestic brokerage ICICI Securities reports a 25% year-on-year growth in core fee income, primarily driven by increased volumes. CLSA has raised its target price for SBI to Rs 1,170, indicating a potential upside of nearly 20%. Other firms, including HSBC and Nomura, have also upgraded their outlooks, anticipating further improvements in profitability.

Future Outlook: Sustaining Growth Momentum

Despite the impressive growth, analysts believe SBI is entering a new phase in its growth cycle, supported by multiple factors that enhance margins, robust loan growth, and healthy asset quality. With increasing earnings visibility, many view SBI as a top choice for long-term investors. While some short-term consolidation may occur, market experts suggest that any corrections could present attractive buying opportunities. Overall, sentiment towards SBI remains positive as it heads into 2026, with expectations of continued strength in its financial performance.
