Russia Imposes Ban on Apple FaceTime and Snapchat Calls Amid Increased Scrutiny
Russia has taken significant steps to tighten its grip on foreign communication platforms by reportedly banning Apple’s FaceTime and Snapchat’s video calling features. This move, announced by the country’s communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, follows a series of similar restrictions aimed at controlling how foreign apps operate within its borders. The decision has raised concerns among users who rely on these platforms for communication, as they may now face new challenges in connecting with others.
New Restrictions Announced by Roskomnadzor
Roskomnadzor has officially disabled the calling features of FaceTime across Russia. Shortly thereafter, the agency also restricted Snapchat’s video calling option. This decision stems from ongoing concerns regarding the use of foreign communication platforms within the country. Russian state media previously indicated that Snapchat could potentially be used to coordinate unlawful activities. In 2022, data revealed that over seven million people in Russia utilized Snapchat, highlighting its popularity. While Roskomnadzor has expressed similar concerns about FaceTime, it has not specified whether the current restrictions will be temporary or permanent.
Part of a Broader Crackdown
This latest action aligns with Russia’s broader initiative to supervise and restrict foreign-owned digital platforms. In August, Roskomnadzor imposed partial limits on voice calling features for popular apps like Telegram and WhatsApp. Although users could still send text messages and access other functionalities, voice calling remained restricted. The regulator has justified these measures as necessary to combat criminal activities, claiming that repeated requests to WhatsApp and Telegram to address accounts linked to unlawful actions went unanswered. As a result, many users have turned to virtual private networks (VPNs) to regain access to the blocked features.
Growing Opposition to Foreign Services
Despite the restrictions, many Russian residents have found ways to bypass limitations on apps like WhatsApp and Telegram using VPN services. Russian lawmakers have consistently voiced their opposition to foreign-operated services, urging citizens to transition to communication platforms developed domestically. This sentiment has intensified as more restrictions are imposed on global applications that operate outside of Russian regulatory oversight. As of now, Roskomnadzor has not clarified the duration of the bans on FaceTime and Snapchat, marking another chapter in Russia’s ongoing effort to maintain tighter control over communication tools within its territory.
