Rupee Strengthens as RBI Support and Weaker Dollar Provide Relief; INR Closes at 89.96 per USD

The Indian rupee showed signs of recovery on Thursday, closing at 89.96 against the US dollar, a modest gain of 19 paise. This rebound followed a period of volatility, influenced by a weaker dollar index and intervention from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The currency had previously hit an all-time low of 90.43 earlier in the day, marking a significant moment as it had breached the 90-per-dollar threshold for the first time just a day prior.

Market Dynamics and Currency Fluctuations

The rupee’s journey on Thursday was marked by fluctuations that reflected broader market dynamics. It opened at 90.36, facing pressure from ongoing foreign investor selling and rising crude oil prices. The currency’s decline was exacerbated by delays in finalizing a trade deal between India and the United States. After reaching a new low of 90.43, the rupee managed to recover slightly, closing at 89.96. This recovery was aided by a softer dollar index, which fell by 0.01% to 98.84, providing some relief to the Indian currency. Traders noted that the US dollar weakened significantly after the ADP non-farm payroll numbers fell short of expectations, creating a more favorable environment for the rupee.

Impact of Foreign Investment and Trade Negotiations

The rupee’s performance has been closely tied to foreign institutional investment trends. On Wednesday, foreign investors sold equities worth Rs 3,206.92 crore, contributing to the currency’s downward pressure. Market analysts have pointed out that the ongoing uncertainty surrounding stalled trade negotiations with the US has further complicated the situation. The RBI’s intervention, which included nationalized banks purchasing dollars at higher levels, was seen as a stabilizing force amid these challenges. However, the overall sentiment remains cautious, with expectations that the rupee may continue to face headwinds from foreign fund outflows and geopolitical tensions.

Sectoral Implications and Economic Outlook

The depreciation of the rupee carries significant implications for various sectors, particularly those reliant on imports. Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran highlighted that while the weaker rupee could potentially boost exports, it also raises the cost of imports, impacting sectors such as electronics, petroleum, and gems and jewelry. As the rupee fluctuates, businesses in these import-heavy industries may experience increased input costs, which could affect their profitability. Despite these challenges, India’s GDP growth has shown resilience, with the HSBC India Services PMI rising to 59.8 in November, indicating strong demand in the services sector.

Looking Ahead: RBI’s Monetary Policy and Market Reactions

As market participants await the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy announcement, there is a keen focus on how the central bank will respond to the current economic landscape. Governor Sanjay Malhotra’s rate-setting panel will consider various factors, including falling inflation, robust growth, and the weaker rupee. The equity markets reflected a positive sentiment on Thursday, with the Sensex gaining 158.51 points to close at 85,265.32, while the Nifty rose by 47.75 points to reach 26,033.75. Analysts suggest that the rupee may trade with a negative bias in the short term, but a subdued dollar and potential RBI interventions could provide necessary support.
