Rupee Declines: Currency Drops 11 Paise to 90.77 Against US Dollar

Rupee opened weaker on Tuesday, declining by 11 paise to 90.77 against the US dollar in early trading. This drop reflects a cautious sentiment among traders following the announcement of an interim trade framework between India and the United States. As trading progressed, the rupee slipped further from its initial position of 90.63, indicating ongoing volatility in the currency market.

Market Reactions to Trade Framework

The recent trade agreement between New Delhi and Washington initially sparked optimism among traders, as it was expected to prevent immediate disruptions and provide a roadmap for future discussions. However, a deeper analysis of the agreement revealed underlying concerns. According to Amit Pabari, Managing Director of CR Forex Advisors, the deal places India under continuous US scrutiny, particularly regarding energy imports from Russia. This oversight raises the possibility of penalties being reinstated at any time, which has led traders to reassess their initial positive outlook.

Pabari emphasized that the near-term performance of the rupee will depend on whether it can maintain key support levels. He identified the 90.00–90.20 range as crucial for stability. If this support holds, the rupee may gradually move towards the 91.00–91.20 range in the coming sessions. The role of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is also significant, as it is expected to intervene by purchasing dollars during dips to prevent sharp appreciation of the rupee.

Foreign Investment Trends

Despite the rupee’s decline, foreign portfolio flows have shown signs of improvement, with approximately $2 billion entering Indian markets this month. This influx has contributed to a more stable overall sentiment. On Monday, foreign institutional investors were net buyers of shares worth Rs 2,254.64 crore, indicating a positive trend in market participation.

However, Pabari cautioned that while these inflows have helped stabilize sentiment, there remains skepticism about their sustainability. The currency market continues to reflect a cautious approach, influenced by rapidly changing global policy signals. Traders are wary of potential shifts that could impact the durability of these foreign investments.

Broader Market Context

In the broader market, the dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major currencies, saw a slight decrease of 0.02%, settling at 97.79. Meanwhile, Brent crude futures also experienced a decline, slipping 0.28% to $68.85 per barrel. These movements in global commodities and currencies are closely monitored by traders as they can significantly influence local market dynamics.

On the domestic front, Indian equities opened positively, with the Sensex gaining 149 points to reach 84,214.75, and the Nifty rising by 44.45 points to 25,911.75 in early trading. This upward trend in the stock market may provide some support to the rupee, although the overall sentiment remains cautious amid ongoing global uncertainties.
