Rebellion CEO Declares Atomfall’s Game Pass Launch a Major Success

Atomfall, the latest action-survival game from Rebellion Developments, made a significant impact upon its launch last month across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms. Released on day one on Xbox Game Pass, the game has quickly attracted over two million players, marking a notable achievement for the independent studio. Rebellion’s CEO, Jason Kingsley, has hailed the launch as a โ€œhuge success,โ€ crediting the partnership with Microsoft for its impressive reach and player engagement.

Game Pass Launch Boosts Visibility

In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Kingsley discussed how the launch strategy for Atomfall benefited from its availability on Xbox Game Pass. He emphasized that this partnership allowed the game to connect with a broader audience. โ€œIt’s been a huge success,” Kingsley stated, highlighting Microsoft’s support in promoting the game. He noted that the collaboration brought valuable resources and expertise to the project, which has proven advantageous for both parties involved.

Kingsley pointed out that one of the primary challenges for any new intellectual property is gaining visibility in a crowded market. He explained that Game Pass facilitates player exploration of new titles, which can lead to organic word-of-mouth promotion. โ€œWith Game Pass, you can get people to try it, then as a result of those people trying it, they like it, and they then tell their mates on social media,โ€ he said. This cycle of discovery and recommendation has contributed to the game’s growing popularity, with some players opting to purchase the game even if they do not subscribe to Game Pass.

Player Engagement and Sales Performance

Rebellion recently announced that Atomfall has surpassed two million players, a figure that includes Game Pass subscribers who accessed the game at no cost. While this number does not directly reflect unit sales, Kingsley expressed satisfaction with the game’s performance, stating that sales have exceeded the studio’s initial expectations. โ€œWe’ve done a lot better than our mid-range estimates, actually, so that’s nice,โ€ he remarked, indicating a positive reception from the gaming community.

The fixed monetary return from launching on Game Pass has also played a crucial role in helping Rebellion achieve profitability with Atomfall. Kingsley acknowledged that while releasing on a subscription service might impact sales on Xbox, the financial benefits from this model have been โ€œdisproportionate.โ€ This stability has allowed the studio to focus on future projects without the immediate pressure of sales fluctuations.

Future Prospects for Atomfall

Looking ahead, Kingsley hinted at the possibility of an Atomfall sequel, given the game’s success. He stated, โ€œNow it looks like we want to do more Atomfall โ€“ it’s been successful, can we find the resources to do it? I don’t know.โ€ This openness to expanding the Atomfall universe reflects the studio’s commitment to building on its achievements while exploring new creative avenues.

Atomfall launched on March 27 and is available on multiple platforms, including PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. Set in a post-apocalyptic version of northern England, the game draws inspiration from the real-life Windscale nuclear incident of the 1950s. Following its release, Rebellion reported that Atomfall had reached over 1.5 million players within its opening weekend, marking it as the most successful launch in the company’s 32-year history. This impressive start underscores the potential for further growth and development within the franchise.
