New God of War Game Set for 2025 Release

Excitement is building among fans as rumors swirl about a new God of War game, potentially a smaller spinoff set in the series’ original Greek mythology, expected to launch later this year. This news coincides with the 20th anniversary of the iconic PlayStation franchise, which recently celebrated the milestone with a free update for God of War Ragnarök. While developer Santa Monica Studio has remained tight-lipped about future projects, speculation suggests they may be working on remasters of earlier titles in the series.

Upcoming Greek-Inspired Side Story

Recent claims indicate that a new God of War “side-story project” is in the works, likely returning to the franchise’s roots in Greek mythology. Industry insider Jeff Grubb from Giant Bomb revealed that instead of a remaster collection, fans can anticipate a fresh narrative set in the familiar Greek landscape, slated for release in 2025. Grubb shared his insights on Bluesky, stating, “Everyone keeps asking about this, so I’ve tried to find out more: There’s still a Greek God of War thing coming out this year, but it’s not a remaster collection. It’s a new side-story project.”

Grubb further clarified that he had not received any information regarding a remaster collection. However, he hinted that an announcement related to God of War could coincide with the franchise’s 20th anniversary celebrations. “I was never told about a Remaster collection, but I asked a source about the rumors and they told me that nothing God of War would happen at the State of Play but something could show up at the anniversary,” he noted.

20th Anniversary Celebrations and Updates

On March 22, Sony commemorated the 20th anniversary of God of War with a series of festivities, including a free update for God of War Ragnarök. This update, titled the Dark Odyssey Collection, introduces new player skins, weapon appearances, armor sets, and various attachments, enhancing the gameplay experience for fans. In addition to the update, Sony launched new merchandise and hosted an exhibition to celebrate the franchise’s rich history.

Despite the anniversary celebrations, Sony has not yet disclosed any concrete plans for the next installment in the God of War series. Earlier this year, the company canceled two live service projects, one of which was rumored to be related to the God of War franchise. This has left fans eagerly awaiting any news from Santa Monica Studio regarding the future direction of the beloved series.

Future Projects at Santa Monica Studio

While details remain scarce, there are indications that Santa Monica Studio is also exploring new intellectual properties. A developer’s LinkedIn profile hinted at the studio’s work on a new IP, although specifics have not been confirmed. The studio’s creative director, Cory Barlog, has previously suggested that the God of War series could delve into other mythologies beyond the Norse saga that concluded with God of War Ragnarök.
