Meta Expands AI Translation in Reels with Hindi and Portuguese Support
Meta is enhancing the Instagram experience by integrating Reels more prominently on both mobile and iPad platforms, particularly in markets like India and South Korea. The company is expanding its AI-powered translation feature to include Hindi and Portuguese, enabling users to engage with content in their preferred languages. This move aims to connect creators with broader audiences across linguistic and cultural barriers, fostering a more inclusive environment on the platform.
Expansion of AI-Powered Translation
Meta first introduced its AI-powered translation feature in August, initially supporting English and Spanish. With the addition of Hindi and Portuguese, the company is strategically targeting its largest markets, such as India and Brazil. Instagram head Adam Mosseri emphasized the potential for creators to reach audiences who speak different languages. By breaking down language barriers, Meta aims to help users grow their following and enhance their experience on the platform. This initiative reflects Meta’s commitment to fostering a diverse and global community of creators.
Automatic Translation for Users and Creators
Users can now enable automatic translation in their preferred language to enjoy Reels created in other languages. For creators, the process is equally straightforward. They can activate the “Translate your voice with Meta AI” option before publishing their Reels. This feature allows them to select target languages for translation after reviewing the automatically dubbed and lip-synced video. This functionality not only broadens the reach of creators but also enhances the viewing experience for users who may not be fluent in the original language of the content.
Upcoming Features and Enhancements
Meta is actively developing additional features for its AI-powered translation capabilities. Currently, Reels on Facebook support multi-speaker AI translations, and this feature is expected to be available for Instagram creators soon. Beyond voice translations, Meta is also working on a feature that will translate text or caption stickers in supported languages. This will be particularly beneficial for users watching videos without sound, as they will have the option to select “Translate text on Reels” when the feature becomes available.
Innovations in Voice Dubbing and Lip-Syncing
In addition to text translations, Meta plans to introduce a new voice-dubbing feature that will maintain the original voice and tone of the creator. This enhancement aims to provide a more authentic viewing experience. Furthermore, the company is developing an improved lip-syncing option that will better align with the creator’s mouth movements. As Meta continues to innovate in translation features, it remains competitive with platforms like YouTube, which has also been enhancing its translation capabilities, including recent improvements to its auto-dubbing feature.
