Maria of the Palatinate-Simmern: Swedish Duchess and Consort
Maria of the Palatinate (24 July 1561 – 29 July 1589) was a German-born Swedish princess and Duchess of Södermanland. She was the first wife of the future King Charles IX of Sweden, though she died before he ascended to the throne.
Early Life and Education
Maria was born in Heidelberg to Louis VI, Elector Palatine and Elisabeth of Hesse. She was raised as an ardent Lutheran according to the principles of the Augsburg Confession and spoke Latin. Her strict Protestant upbringing would prove significant in her future marriage, as her faith aligned with the religious convictions of her intended husband.
Career and Achievements
In April 1578, Swedish Prince Charles, Duke of Södermanland, visited Heidelberg and proposed marriage to Maria. Her father accepted the proposal on condition that Maria be guaranteed the right to practice her Lutheran faith in Sweden, which was then ruled by Charles’s brother John III, known for Catholic sympathies. The wedding took place in Heidelberg on 11 May 1579.
After the marriage, Maria relocated to Sweden and took up residence in Charles’s Duchy of Södermanland. In September 1579, she received the oath of loyalty from subjects in her dower lands, which included Gripsholm, Tynnelsö and Rävsnäs estates, Strängnäs city with its parishes, and other holdings. She accompanied Charles throughout the Duchy as her pregnancies permitted and became known for her diplomatic influence. Supplicants frequently approached her seeking intervention with Charles, whose fierce temperament she was said to temper with her calmness and gentleness. Charles himself credited her as more educated in religion than anyone he knew, and her strong Lutheran convictions are believed to have reinforced his own pro-Lutheran political stance. In 1585, she requested that her father send a Lutheran preacher to counter the spread of Calvinism in Simmern.
Notable Events and Milestones
Maria bore six children between 1580 and 1589, though only one survived to adulthood: Catharina, born in 1584. The others—Margareta Elisabet, Elisabet Sabina, Ludvig, Gustav, and Maria—all died in infancy or early childhood. Her marriage to Charles was described as happy despite the toll of constant pregnancies on her fragile health. She died at Eskilstuna Palace on 29 July 1589 after a long-term illness and was buried in Strängnäs Cathedral. Later examination of her remains revealed her to have been small and brunette in appearance.
Awards and Honors
The town of Mariestad, founded in 1583, and the royal estate Marieholm were named in her honor. Charles mourned her greatly following her death.
