IEA Chief Discusses Ongoing Energy Crisis Amid Potential Resolution of Middle East Conflict
With oil prices nearing $120 a barrel and winter intensifying concerns over fuel supplies, the global energy crisis is expected to persist beyond the ongoing conflict in Iran. Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), stated that energy markets are unlikely to revert to pre-war conditions by 2027. He urged governments and businesses to prioritize energy security in light of the disruptions affecting global energy flows.
Oil Prices Near $120 a Barrel Add to Economic Pressure
The strain on oil markets is evident as Brent crude futures surged to $117 a barrel, the highest level in nearly six months, following increased Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia. Although prices eased to $115 per barrel on Monday, they remain approximately 59% above pre-war levels. Birol noted that while some regions, like Europe, may find current oil prices manageable, many parts of the world are facing significant trade deficits due to the high costs.
Winter Demand and Refinery Maintenance Threaten Fuel Supplies
Birol expressed concerns about the availability and cost of refined products, particularly diesel, as winter approaches. The demand for diesel typically rises during colder months, coinciding with scheduled maintenance at several refineries. He highlighted the potential for increased pressure on fuel markets due to these factors.
Europe Faces a Difficult Winter
Europe is bracing for a challenging winter regarding gas supplies. The decision to reduce imports of Russian gas, coupled with disruptions in gas exports from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates due to the Iran conflict, is expected to strain gas markets significantly. Birol also noted a potential resurgence in nuclear power, with 90 gigawatts of nuclear capacity currently under construction, the highest level in four decades.
