India and New Zealand Celebrate Century of Rugby Ties

In a significant moment for international sports diplomacy, the India–New Zealand U20 Rugby Series concluded at the Rajgir Sports Complex in Bihar, highlighting a century of friendship between the two nations through sports. Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Smt. Raksha Khadse, emphasized the importance of this series in expanding opportunities for young athletes and promoting cooperation in sports development.

The historic series, part of the 100 Years of Unity through Sport initiative, brought together young athletes from both countries, showcasing how sports can foster mutual respect and understanding. The event featured joint training sessions, cultural exchanges, and exciting Rugby Sevens matches, including two mixed-team matches where players from both nations competed side by side.

Bridging Cultures Through Sport

The assembly included notable dignitaries such as Shri Samrat Chaudhary, Chief Minister of Bihar, Smt. Shreyasi Singh, Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs for Bihar, and Mr. Rahul Bose, President of Rugby India. Smt. Raksha Khadse spoke about how sports serve as a powerful tool for soft power, bridging borders and enhancing relationships between nations. She stated, “As India and New Zealand celebrate 100 years of sporting ties, exchanges like this demonstrate that sports can strengthen bilateral relations and foster cultural dialogue.”

Ms. Shreyasi Singh added, “Hosting the India-New Zealand rugby exchange is a point of pride for Bihar, as it not only showcases our commitment to strengthening the sports ecosystem but also highlights the cultural exchanges that sports facilitate. This series enables young athletes to learn from each other while building lasting relationships.”

Fostering Rugby Development

Rahul Bose echoed these sentiments, noting that the series symbolizes more than just sport. He remarked on the values of respect, teamwork, and friendship inherent in rugby. The mixed-team matches stood out as a representation of unity, with players from India and New Zealand collaborating on the field. Bose hopes that these relationships will lead to sustained collaboration between Rugby India and New Zealand Rugby.

The New Zealand delegation included the U20 men’s team, Tama Toa, and the U20 women’s team, Hine Toa, featuring a diverse mix of young Māori players. Their visit enabled them to immerse in Indian culture while sharing their own traditions with Indian teammates.

Building Lasting Connections

The series also reinforces the cooperation between Rugby India and New Zealand Rugby, having previously hosted coaching development programs aimed at enhancing rugby coaching skills in India. The initiatives highlight how international sporting exchanges can strengthen bilateral relationships, encourage cultural understanding, and create meaningful connections among young athletes.

As India and New Zealand mark a century of sporting collaboration, the India–New Zealand U20 Rugby Series in Rajgir stands as a testament to the unifying power of sports, paving the way for deeper international cooperation and cultural dialogues.
