Live Updates on Stock Market: Sensex Declines Over 700 Points; Nifty50 Falls Below 24,250 Amid Rising Oil Prices

Indian equity markets are set to begin trading on a weak note on Thursday, April 23, 2026, as they react to significant declines in the GIFT Nifty and cautious global signals. Currently, GIFT Nifty is trading around 24,200, down nearly 160 points, suggesting a gap-down start for domestic indices. This downturn is attributed to profit booking following a recent rally, ongoing foreign institutional selling, and a cautious sentiment stemming from geopolitical tensions, particularly the US-Iran discussions, alongside pre-earnings anxiety in global markets.

Market Performance and Trends

In the previous trading session on April 22, 2026, benchmark indices experienced volatility and closed lower after struggling to maintain higher levels. The Nifty index fell below the 24,400 mark, reflecting selling pressure primarily in banking and financial stocks, which had recently outperformed. Despite this, broader market segments showed more resilience, indicating selective participation even amid weakness in major indices. The mixed performance of broader markets suggests that while large-cap stocks faced challenges, there was still some strength in smaller and mid-cap stocks.

Sector Analysis

Sector-wise, banking and financial stocks were particularly hard hit due to their recent strong rally and high institutional ownership. Information Technology (IT) stocks also faced pressure, influenced by subdued global cues and uncertainty in international markets. Conversely, defensive sectors such as Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) and Energy displayed relative strength, helping to cushion the overall market decline. The resilience in these sectors indicates that investors may be seeking safety amid broader market volatility.

Technical Insights and Institutional Activity

From a technical standpoint, the Nifty 50 index is encountering resistance in the 24,400–24,500 range, where profit booking has been evident. Immediate support levels are identified around 24,100–24,000. A sustained move above the resistance could reignite bullish momentum; however, failure to maintain support may lead to further corrections or range-bound trading in the near term. The Bank Nifty remains structurally positive but is showing signs of consolidation at elevated levels, with resistance near 57,000–57,200 and support around 56,200–56,000.

On the institutional front, both Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) and Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) were net sellers in the cash segment on April 22, 2026, marking a rare occurrence. DIIs recorded outflows of approximately ₹1,048 crore, while FIIs saw outflows of about ₹2,078 crore, reflecting a cautious domestic stance. The India VIX, currently trading around 18.30, has risen by 4.38%, indicating increased market volatility and investor caution.

Outlook for the Trading Session

The overall market outlook for today suggests a gap-down opening, followed by a range-bound to mildly negative trading session. The weak GIFT Nifty, persistent selling by FIIs, DII profit booking, rising volatility, and global uncertainties are likely to weigh on market sentiment. While the broader trend remains positive, short-term consolidation appears probable, with strong support expected at lower levels. Limited upside potential is anticipated unless new positive triggers emerge, according to Aakash Shah, Technical Research Analyst at Choice Equity Broking Private Limited.
