Life and Career
John Ritter, born Jonathan Southworth Ritter on September 17, 1948, in Burbank, California, was the son of singing cowboy star Tex Ritter and actress Dorothy Fay. He studied at the University of Southern California, initially considering a career in politics before turning to acting. He began building his résumé through guest appearances on television series in the early 1970s.
Ritter’s breakout role came in 1977 when he was cast as Jack Tripper, a young chef who pretends to be gay in order to share an apartment with two female roommates, on the ABC sitcom “Three’s Company.” The show became one of the most popular sitcoms of its era, and Ritter’s gift for physical comedy earned him a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe. He continued the role in the spinoff series “Three’s a Crowd.”
After “Three’s Company” ended, Ritter worked steadily across film and television, taking on both comedic and dramatic roles, including a notable turn in the drama “Sling Blade” (1996). In the early 2000s, he found renewed popularity as the star of the ABC family sitcom “8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter,” which was in production at the time of his death.

Ritter died suddenly on September 11, 2003, at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California, at the age of 54. He had been rehearsing on the set of “8 Simple Rules” when he began experiencing chest pain and was rushed to the hospital, where he was later found to have suffered an aortic dissection, a rare and often fatal tear in the body’s main artery. He died just six days short of his 55th birthday.
John Ritter’s unexpected death shocked the entertainment industry and led to greater public awareness of aortic dissection as a medical condition.
