IPL 2026 Auction: Are Teams Set to Utilize Right to Match Cards?

As the IPL 2026 mini auction approaches, excitement builds among fans and franchises regarding the potential use of the Right To Match (RTM) card in Abu Dhabi. Scheduled for December 16, this auction marks the third consecutive year the event will take place outside India. Following last year’s extensive mega auction in Jeddah, teams will now focus on refining their squads rather than complete overhauls. With the deadline for player retention having passed on November 15, teams are strategizing their next moves.

RTM Card Not Available for Mini Auction

The IPL Governing Council has confirmed that the Right To Match card will not be utilized during the upcoming mini auction. This decision aligns with the purpose of mini auctions, where teams can retain as many players as they wish prior to the event. The RTM card, which allows franchises to reclaim players by matching the highest bid, was initially introduced for mega auctions to ensure competitive balance. It was last used in the 2018 mega auction and has since been phased out for subsequent seasons.

In mini auctions, the absence of the RTM card means that teams must rely on strategic planning and effective purse management. Franchises will focus on targeted acquisitions to fill specific gaps in their rosters without the safety net of the RTM card. This shift in strategy is expected to create a more dynamic bidding environment as teams aim to strengthen their lineups.

Franchise Strategies and Retained Players

As teams prepare for the auction, their strategies vary significantly. Some franchises, like the Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders, have opted for substantial roster changes, freeing up considerable portions of their auction budgets. In contrast, teams such as the Mumbai Indians are expected to maintain continuity, making only selective additions to their squads.

The deadline for announcing retained players has already passed, and franchises are now focused on identifying key players to target during the auction. The differing approaches to squad management will likely influence the dynamics of the bidding process, as teams assess their needs and the available talent pool.

Available Auction Purse and Team Needs

The financial landscape for the IPL 2026 mini auction reveals varying purse sizes and roster needs across franchises. The Kolkata Knight Riders lead with a purse of ₹64.3 crore, needing to fill 13 spots. The Chennai Super Kings follow with ₹43.4 crore and nine spots to fill. Other teams, such as the Sunrisers Hyderabad and Lucknow Super Giants, have ₹25.5 crore and ₹22.95 crore, respectively, with multiple spots to address.

The Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru are also in the mix, with ₹21.8 crore and ₹16.4 crore available, needing to fill eight spots each. Meanwhile, the Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans have smaller purses of ₹16.05 crore and ₹12.9 crore, respectively, with fewer spots to fill. The Mumbai Indians, with the least available at ₹2.75 crore, will have to be strategic in their selections to enhance their squad effectively.
