Innovative Highway Initiative Balances Safety and Wildlife Protection

As India ambitiously expands its highway network, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), guided by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), is setting new standards for responsible infrastructure development. A groundbreaking safety initiative has emerged on a stretch of National Highway that navigates through a sensitive forest and ghat area, showcasing a commitment to harmonizing human safety, wildlife protection, and ecological conservation.

This innovative measure is primarily implemented along a challenging 2.0 km ghat section within the larger 11.96 km highway project that traverses the Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve, formerly known as Nauradehi Sanctuary, in Madhya Pradesh.

India’s First ‘Table-Top Red Marking’ on a Highway

Drew from global best practices like Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, NHAI has introduced India’s inaugural ‘table-top red marking’ on a National Highway. A special layer of 5 mm thick hot-applied thermoplastic in a striking red hue has been laid down across the roadway in the designated danger zone. This bright red alert warns drivers that they are entering a speed-restricted wildlife-sensitive corridor. The slightly elevated surface provides tactile and audible cues to encourage speed reduction, allowing for a smoother driving experience without abrupt braking.

Minimal Impact, Maximum Protection

What truly distinguishes this initiative is its low ecological footprint. Key benefits include:

  • No disruption to wildlife movement or habitats.
  • No changes to the pavement structure or drainage.
  • Reduced noise levels compared to traditional rumble strips.
  • Simple maintenance and easily reversible should future upgrades be necessary.

The addition of white shoulder lines on both sides of the highway further guides motorists, minimizing the risk of vehicles drifting onto unpaved areas and enhancing overall safety.

Comprehensive Wildlife Safety Measures

In its efforts to protect wildlife, NHAI has adopted a thorough approach along this corridor:

  • 25 specially designed animal underpasses have been constructed at key animal movement points along the 11.96 km stretch.
  • These underpasses are harmoniously integrated with natural ground levels and drainage pathways to facilitate regular animal crossings.
  • Continuous chain-link fencing surrounds the highway (except in deep cutting areas) to deter animals from wandering onto the road, guiding them instead toward the underpasses.
  • Cameras on minor bridges, also serving as animal crossing points, will help monitor wildlife activity.
  • Solar-powered lighting has been installed at bridges and junctions, increasing visibility at critical conflict points without adding environmental stress.

Despite the designation of the 2.0 km section as a danger zone, the effective fencing and underpass system ensures that animals do not cross directly onto the roadway, delivering safety for both wildlife and drivers alike.

A Model for Sustainable Highway Development

This initiative exemplifies how modern highway engineering can achieve compatibility with conservation objectives. By fusing international best practices, scientific research, and ecological considerations, NHAI has created a solution that:

  • Reduces accidents, thus saving human lives.
  • Protects wildlife from hazardous vehicle collisions.
  • Maintains the integrity of forest ecosystems.
  • Ensures safe and comfortable travel for road users.

As India ambitiously builds infrastructure across diverse landscapes, this project sets a new standard, emphasizing environmentally conscious, user-friendly designs where red markings signify not danger, but a thoughtful approach to road safety and ecological awareness.
