India’s Renewable Energy Capacity Surges to 220 GW

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has announced significant advancements in India’s clean energy sector for the fiscal year 2024โ25. The country achieved a record capacity addition of 29.52 gigawatts (GW), bringing the total installed renewable energy capacity to 220.10 GW as of March 31, 2025. This growth is a crucial step towards India’s ambitious goal of reaching 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030, as outlined in Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s ‘Panchamrit’ initiative.
Solar Energy Leads the Charge
Solar energy has emerged as the primary driver of capacity expansion this fiscal year, contributing 23.83 GW, a remarkable increase from the 15.03 GW added in the previous year. The total installed solar capacity now stands at 105.65 GW. This figure includes 81.01 GW from ground-mounted installations, 17.02 GW from rooftop solar systems, 2.87 GW from hybrid project components, and 4.74 GW from off-grid systems. The surge in solar energy adoption highlights a growing trend toward both utility-scale and distributed solar solutions, reflecting the sector’s increasing importance in India’s energy landscape.
Wind Energy Shows Steady Growth
Wind energy also demonstrated consistent progress, with an addition of 4.15 GW in new capacity during FY 2024โ25, up from 3.25 GW in the previous fiscal year. The cumulative installed wind capacity has now reached 50.04 GW, solidifying wind energy’s vital role in India’s renewable energy mix. This steady increase in wind installations underscores the government’s commitment to diversifying the country’s energy sources and enhancing its renewable energy portfolio.
Bioenergy and Small Hydro Power Maintain Their Momentum
In addition to solar and wind, bioenergy and small hydro power sectors are also making significant contributions. Bioenergy installations have reached a total capacity of 11.58 GW, which includes 0.53 GW from off-grid and waste-to-energy projects. Meanwhile, small hydro power projects have achieved a capacity of 5.10 GW, with an additional 0.44 GW currently under implementation. These sectors play a crucial role in complementing solar and wind energy, contributing to a decentralized and diversified energy landscape in India.
Future Prospects for Clean Energy Projects
Looking ahead, India has a robust pipeline of renewable energy projects, with 169.40 GW currently under implementation and an additional 65.06 GW tendered. This includes 65.29 GW from innovative solutions such as hybrid systems, round-the-clock (RTC) power, peaking power, and thermal plus renewable energy bundling projects. These initiatives represent a strategic shift aimed at ensuring grid stability and a reliable supply of renewable energy. Under the leadership of Union Minister Shri Pralhad Joshi, the MNRE is actively pursuing Prime Minister Modi’s vision of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, reinforcing India’s commitment to climate goals and energy security.
