Indian Railways Reports Strong Growth in Freight and Passengers

Indian Railways showcased impressive operational performance in June 2026, reflecting ongoing growth in both freight transportation and passenger services. The increase in freight loading, rising passenger numbers, and expanded services underscore the organization’s commitment to fostering economic development and enhancing logistics while providing convenient travel options across India.

Freight Loading Registers Robust Growth

During June 2026, Indian Railways loaded a total of 142.21 million tonnes of freight, marking a 4% increase from 136.71 million tonnes in June 2025. This growth translated into a revenue boost of approximately ₹430 crore, representing a 3% rise compared to the previous year.

Several key commodities experienced noteworthy increases in loading for the month. Notably, fertilizer loading rose by 19.1%, while balance other goods saw a 17.3% increase. Iron ore loading increased by 9.4%, domestic coal by 4.9%, total coal by 3.6%, and clinker by 7.2%. These figures highlight the sustained demand from essential sectors of the economy.

This strong performance in June is part of a broader trend, as Indian Railways loaded 419.08 million tonnes of freight from April to June 2026, a rise from 413.05 million tonnes during the same period in the previous fiscal year. The quarter also registered commendable growth across various commodity segments; iron ore loading surged by 7.44%, clinker by 6.54%, and balance and other goods by 12.16% compared to last year.

In response to the increased demand from thermal power stations during the prolonged summer months, Indian Railways enhanced its domestic coal transportation, supplying 7% more coal to power plants in June 2026 than in the previous June. This initiative is crucial in ensuring uninterrupted power generation nationwide.

Passenger Traffic Continues to Grow

Passenger travel also experienced steady growth during June 2026, with Indian Railways transporting 63.81 crore passengers, up from 62.37 crore in the same month last year.

The non-suburban segment, which encompasses both short and long-distance travel, grew by 3.9%, with passenger numbers rising from 28.90 crore to 30.04 crore. The suburban segment also showed positive growth, increasing by 0.9% from 33.46 crore to 33.77 crore passengers.

Expansion of Modern Passenger Services

To enhance passenger experience, Indian Railways is modernizing its services with an expansion of premium train operations. The fleet of Vande Bharat services now stands at 164, including the newly launched Vande Bharat Sleeper service connecting Howrah and Kamakhya. Meanwhile, the number of Amrit Bharat train services has expanded to 72, with four new routes inaugurated in June 2026, further boosting affordable and modern connectivity across the country.

The ongoing growth in freight and passenger traffic exemplifies Indian Railways’ dedication to providing efficient logistics and reliable services. Through continued capacity enhancements, improved operational efficiencies, and customer-focused initiatives, Indian Railways is committed to supporting India’s economic development while ensuring safe and comfortable travel for passengers across the nation.
