Indian Prime Minister Strengthens Ties with Ethiopia in Historic Visit

During a landmark visit to Ethiopia, Prime Minister of India addressed the Joint Session of the Ethiopian Parliament, marking his first bilateral visit to the nation. In a speech laced with mutual respect and cultural references, he expressed heartfelt greetings of friendship from India to the Ethiopian lawmakers and recognized the honor of addressing the Parliament as a significant moment in his diplomatic journey.

Prime Minister highlighted the profound historical connections between India and Ethiopia, emphasizing the blending of ancient wisdom with modern aspirations. He drew interesting parallels, noting that both nations refer to their homelands as ‘mother’ in their respective national anthems. He also paid tribute to the sacrifices made during shared struggles, specifically mentioning the valor of Indian soldiers who fought alongside Ethiopians for their liberation in 1941. The Prime Minister honored the memory of these heroes with a visit to the Adwa Victory Monument, a powerful symbol of Ethiopian resilience.

Expressing India’s commitment to bolstering partnerships, the Prime Minister acknowledged the contributions of Indian educators and businesses to Ethiopia’s development. He offered insights into India’s own growth stories, particularly in digital infrastructure, food processing, and innovation, signaling India’s readiness to support Ethiopia’s development agenda in alignment with its national priorities. He reiterated India’s humanitarian stance, reflected in its principle of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ which advocates for global unity and harmony, highlighting India’s role in supplying Covid vaccines to Ethiopia.

The Prime Minister stressed the significance of collaboration among nations of the Global South, urging a collective voice for developing countries in global discussions. His address also recognized Ethiopia’s commitment to fighting terrorism and acknowledged its vital role as host to the African Union in Addis Ababa. He proudly noted that India had extended its G20 chairmanship to include the African Union as a permanent member, illustrating a commitment to strengthening India-Africa relations over the past eleven years, marked by over 100 high-level exchanges.

Furthermore, he reaffirmed India’s dedication to Africa’s development, reflecting on his proposal from the recent G20 summit to launch the ‘Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative’ aimed at training one million trainers across the continent. He concluded his speech by expressing gratitude to the Speaker of the Ethiopian Parliament for the opportunity to share insights from India’s journey, commending the Global South for its strong determination to carve its own future.
