Indian Navy Hosts Meteorological Symposium to Enhance Maritime Safety

The Indian Navy recently held its third Meteorological and Oceanological Symposium, titled Meghayan 25, on April 14, 2025. This event, commemorating World Meteorological Organization Day, was inaugurated virtually by Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff. The symposium gathered experts, naval officers, and key stakeholders from various meteorological and oceanographic organizations to discuss advancements and strategies in maritime safety and coordination.

Engaging Sessions and Expert Discussions

The symposium featured a comprehensive technical program divided into two sessions, each led by experienced moderators. The first session, overseen by Rear Admiral G. Rambabu, Principal of the Indian Naval Academy, focused on the latest developments in Marine Meteorology and Oceanology. Presentations highlighted innovative research and practices that can enhance maritime operations. The second session, moderated by Commodore S.M.U. Athar, shifted the focus to Statistical Approaches in Weather Forecasting. Both sessions concluded with interactive Q&A segments, encouraging active participation from attendees.

A notable aspect of the event was a panel discussion titled โ€œClosing the Early Warning Gap Together: Enhancing Maritime Security and Coordination.โ€ This discussion brought together experts to explore integrated strategies for improving maritime safety. The panel was skillfully moderated by Vice Admiral Pradeep Chauhan (Retd), Director General of the National Maritime Foundation, ensuring a rich exchange of ideas and insights.

Keynote Address and Special Recognitions

The final session of the symposium was presided over by Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, the Vice Chief of Naval Staff. The event also saw the presence of several distinguished guests, including Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, and Dr. Nilesh Desai, Director of the Space Applications Center, who served as the Guest of Honour. Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the Indian Meteorological Department, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in meteorological services.

A highlight of the symposium was the recognition of Commodore P.I. Oommen (Retd), a pioneer in the Navyโ€™s Meteorological specialization. At 94 years old, he shared cherished memories and experiences, inspiring attendees with his dedication to the field.

Launch of New Initiatives and Publications

In line with the Indian Navy’s commitment to enhancing meteorological services, the Meteorological and Oceanographic Satellite Data Archival Centre – Indian Navy (MOSDAC-IN) was officially launched during the symposium. This initiative, a collaboration between the Directorate of Naval Oceanology and Meteorology and the Space Applications Center, aims to provide customized satellite-derived weather products tailored for individual Naval Meteorological Offices. Additionally, the symposium marked the revival of the professional Meteorological and Oceanological journal, with the launch of its 10th edition titled Sagarmanthan. This publication, which had been on hiatus for nearly a decade, aims to disseminate valuable research and insights within the meteorological community.
