India-US Trade Agreement: Piyush Goyal Reveals Indian Goods Set for Zero Tariffs in America

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal announced on Saturday that a new trade agreement between India and the United States is set to significantly enhance India’s export potential. The agreement, which is expected to be finalized soon, includes a reduction in tariffs from 50% to 18%, making Indian exports more competitive in the US market. Goyal emphasized that this deal opens up new opportunities for India’s economic growth and will particularly benefit various sectors.
Key Benefits of the Trade Agreement
The trade agreement is poised to provide substantial advantages for Indian exporters. By lowering the tariff rate to 18%, the deal positions Indian goods favorably compared to those from neighboring countries. Goyal highlighted that this reduction will greatly assist exporters, fostering a more robust trade relationship between India and the US. The agreement is expected to be signed in the coming days, marking a significant milestone in bilateral trade discussions. Goyal expressed optimism about the potential for increased exports, stating that the deal brings “new hopes and opportunities” for India’s growth trajectory.
Zero Tariff Exports to the US
Under the new trade agreement, several Indian exports will benefit from zero tariffs when entering the US market. Goyal provided a comprehensive list of items that will enjoy this advantage, including gems and diamonds, pharmaceutical products, aircraft parts, and smartphones. Additionally, a variety of agricultural products such as spices, tea, coffee, coconut oil, and various fruits—including avocado, banana, mango, and pineapple—will also be exempt from tariffs. This broad range of zero-duty items is expected to enhance India’s export competitiveness and support the “Make in India” initiative.
Protection for Sensitive Sectors
Despite the favorable terms for Indian exports, Goyal assured that sensitive agricultural and dairy sectors will remain protected under the agreement. He clarified that no genetically modified products from the US will be permitted in India as part of the trade deal. This protection aims to safeguard local farmers and ensure that Indian agricultural products can be exported to the US without facing tariff barriers. Goyal emphasized that while Indian agricultural products will enjoy zero-duty exports, no concessions have been made for US agricultural products entering the Indian market.
Future Trade Prospects
The trade agreement comes on the heels of a commitment by India to purchase $500 billion worth of US goods over the next five years. This includes energy, aircraft, precious metals, technology products, and coking coal. The announcement of the trade deal was made earlier this week by US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, signaling a strong intent to deepen economic ties between the two nations. As the agreement moves closer to finalization, both countries are poised to benefit from enhanced trade relations and increased economic collaboration.
