India Unveils 42 New Tourism Destinations

The Ministry of Tourism has announced the identification of 42 new destinations across India as part of its Challenge Based Destination Development (CBDD) initiative, a component of the Swadesh Darshan scheme. These destinations have been categorized into four thematic areas: Spiritual Tourism, Culture & Heritage, Vibrant Village Program, and Ecotourism and Amrit Dharohar Sites. This strategic move aims to enhance tourism and promote sustainable development in various regions.

Categories of Destinations

The identified destinations fall under four distinct categories, each designed to highlight unique aspects of India’s rich cultural and natural heritage.

  1. Spiritual Tourism: This category includes 11 destinations, showcasing India’s diverse spiritual landscape. Notable sites such as the Ahobilam Temple in Andhra Pradesh and Ramrekha Dham in Jharkhand are part of this selection.
  2. Culture & Heritage: With 16 destinations, this category emphasizes India’s historical and cultural richness. Locations like Nagarjuna Sagar in Andhra Pradesh and Bhagalpur in Bihar are included, offering visitors a glimpse into the country’s vibrant past.
  3. Vibrant Village Program: This initiative features five destinations aimed at promoting rural tourism. Kibitho in Arunachal Pradesh and Mana Village in Uttarakhand are among the selected sites, encouraging visitors to explore rural life and traditions.
  4. Ecotourism and Amrit Dharohar Sites: Encompassing 10 destinations, this category focuses on sustainable tourism practices. Sites like Sivasagar in Assam and Mayali Bagicha in Chhattisgarh are designed to attract nature enthusiasts and promote environmental conservation.

    Action Plan for Implementation

To facilitate the development of these destinations, the Ministry of Tourism has provided a template to state governments and Union Territory administrations. This template will assist in formulating detailed action plans and submitting project proposals for each identified destination.

The proposals will be evaluated based on specific parameters and guidelines set forth by the Ministry. This process ensures that each project aligns with the overarching goals of the CBDD scheme, which emphasizes both hard infrastructure and softer interventions to enhance the visitor experience.

    Government Commitment to Tourism Growth

Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, shared this information in a written reply in Lok Sabha. The government’s commitment to promoting tourism through the CBDD initiative reflects a broader strategy to boost local economies and preserve cultural heritage. By investing in these 42 destinations, the Ministry aims to create sustainable tourism opportunities that benefit both visitors and local communities.
