India Takes a Leap in Laptop Manufacturing
In a significant advancement for India’s electronics manufacturing sector, Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Railways, and Information & Broadcasting, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, inaugurated Syrma SGS Technology’s cutting-edge laptop assembly line in Chennai. This event marks a crucial step in India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, expanding its manufacturing capabilities from mobile phones to IT hardware, particularly laptops. The new facility, located in the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ), is set to play a vital role in enhancing India’s position in the global electronics market.
A Milestone in โMake in Indiaโ
The newly inaugurated assembly line is expected to produce 100,000 laptops annually, with plans to scale up to 1 million units within the next one to two years. Syrma SGS Technology currently operates four manufacturing units in Chennai, with the latest unit now dedicated to laptop production. During the inauguration, Minister Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of developing the electronic component ecosystem. He stated, “We must work meticulously to ensure that the electronic component ecosystem is also developed in the coming time. This will not only drive a major growth story for India but also align with our vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, fostering self-reliance and strengthening our position in the global electronics manufacturing landscape.” This initiative is part of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) 2.0 scheme for IT hardware, showcasing India’s growing capabilities in high-value electronics production and reinforcing the nation’s self-reliance in the IT sector.
Key Highlights of the Assembly Line
The Syrma SGS assembly line boasts several key features that underline its significance. Firstly, the facility has partnered with Micro-Star International (MSI), a leading Taiwanese technology company, to manufacture high-quality laptops tailored for both domestic and international markets. This collaboration is expected to enhance the quality and competitiveness of Indian-made laptops. Secondly, the facility is projected to create 150-200 specialized jobs in electronics manufacturing by FY26. This job creation will have a substantial impact on Tamil Nadu’s regional economy and contribute to India’s national economic growth. Lastly, the laptops produced at this facility will adhere to international quality standards, showcasing India’s evolving technical and manufacturing capabilities. This commitment to quality is crucial as India seeks to establish itself as a global leader in IT hardware manufacturing.
Indiaโs Rising Electronics Manufacturing Sector
India’s electronics manufacturing sector has experienced remarkable growth over the past decade. Total production surged from โน2.4 lakh crore in 2014 to an impressive โน9.8 lakh crore in 2024. Mobile manufacturing alone reached โน4.4 lakh crore, with exports hitting โน1.5 lakh crore in 2024. Notably, 98% of the mobile phones used in India are now manufactured domestically, with smartphones emerging as the fourth largest export item from the country. This growth trajectory highlights India’s potential to become a global manufacturing hub for electronics, particularly in the IT hardware segment.
Tamil Nadu: A Key Contributor
Tamil Nadu plays a pivotal role in India’s electronics manufacturing landscape. The state is home to over 47 manufacturing units supported by various schemes from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). It is one of the largest beneficiaries of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing, with seven out of the 27 approved units under PLI 2.0 located in the state. Additionally, Tamil Nadu has received substantial support through programs like the Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS) and the Modified Special Incentive Package Scheme (M-SIPS). These initiatives have attracted significant investments and enabled local companies to achieve total production exceeding โน1.3 lakh crore. The state is also home to the Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) at Pillaipakkam Village, Sriperumbudur, which is expected to attract investments worth โน8,700 crore and create over 36,000 jobs. Tamil Nadu’s contribution to India’s electronics exports stands at around 30%, underscoring its crucial role in the sector.
