India Debuts Jute Apparel for Commonwealth Games 2026

In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at promoting sustainable textiles, India is set to present jute-viscose blended apparel for its athletes and team members competing in the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland. This event, scheduled from July 23 to August 2, 2026, will be a historic showcase of India’s innovative use of natural fibers.

The National Jute Board (NJB), operating under the Ministry of Textiles, is leading this initiative, which aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to foster domestic production through the Make in India campaign. Under the guidance of Union Minister for Textiles, Giriraj Singh, the NJB is emphasizing the value-added applications of jute as a biodegradable and environmentally friendly textile choice.

Jute Apparel Unveiled in New Delhi

On July 7, 2026, an official Kit Unveiling and Send-off Ceremony took place in New Delhi. Key figures attending the event included Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Khadse, and Indian Olympic Association President P. T. Usha.

This marks a momentous occasion as jute-based apparel will be featured for the first time at an international multi-sport event. This pioneering step is expected to enhance the visibility of India’s jute industry on a global scale while celebrating the skills of Indian manufacturers and recognizing the vital role of jute farmers.

Collaboration with Leading Partners

The NJB collaborated with Gloster Jute Mills based in Kolkata to create the jute-viscose blended fabric. The initial unveiling of these innovative apparel pieces occurred during the NJB Foundation Day in Patna on April 1, 2026. Their inclusion in the Commonwealth Games attire was positively received by representatives of the Indian Olympic Association.

Additionally, the Indian Olympic Association and NJB worked hand-in-hand to ensure that this stylish, eco-friendly attire is worn by the Indian contingent, which consists of 124 members, including 78 male and 46 female athletes.

Strengthening Jute’s Market Potential

The NJB extends its heartfelt thanks to the Indian Olympic Association for supporting the inclusion of this ‘Make in India’ jute attire for the athletes. This initiative is expected to bolster the Jute Diversification Programme, paving the way for new market opportunities for sustainable jute products both domestically and internationally. Furthermore, it positions natural fibers as a viable alternative in the global textile landscape, marking a proud milestone for India’s jute farmers.
