India and Japan Strengthen Trade Relations: PM Modi and Takaichi Sign MoC with $10 Billion Investment and AI Initiatives

India and Japan have taken significant steps to enhance their trade and strategic partnership by signing a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) during the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit held at Hyderabad House in New Delhi. The agreement was signed in the presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who is on her first visit to India as Prime Minister. The discussions focused on expanding bilateral and global cooperation between the two nations.
During the summit, PM Modi emphasized the growing economic ties, noting that around 120 new business agreements have been finalized in the past year, expected to bring over $10 billion in Japanese investment to India. He stated that the goal is to attract 10 trillion Yen in investment from Japan and to double the number of Japanese companies operating in India over the next decade. Modi also highlighted the importance of a free and rules-based Indo-Pacific region as a shared priority for both countries.
AI and Tech Boost
Technology cooperation emerged as a central theme of the summit. Both leaders issued a joint statement on artificial intelligence, with several Indian AI institutions signing agreements with their Japanese counterparts. PM Modi remarked that the synergy between Japan’s precision technology and India’s software capabilities would enhance global AI development.
Additionally, the two nations signed an agreement for their first joint defense co-development project, focusing on the Naval Radio Antenna ‘Unicorn.’ This collaboration marks a new chapter in defense technology partnership, aimed at strengthening regional peace and maritime security. Agreements were also reached in pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and biotechnology, with Modi stating the goal of delivering affordable and advanced health solutions globally.
Japanese PM Takaichi in India
Prime Minister Takaichi’s visit included bilateral discussions with PM Modi, followed by delegation-level talks involving senior officials such as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval. Takaichi received a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where she was introduced to Modi’s Cabinet colleagues.
The three-day visit, from July 1 to 3, is expected to review the full range of bilateral cooperation and address regional and global issues of mutual interest. The Ministry of External Affairs noted that the summit provides an opportunity to strengthen cooperation across strategic, economic, technological, and security sectors. Diplomatic sources indicated that discussions may also cover maritime security and the development of an “Industrial Value Chain” linking the Bay of Bengal with India’s Northeast.
