Hyderabad CSIR Labs Propel India’s Scientific Innovation

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh has praised the significant contributions of Hyderabad-based CSIR institutes in drug discovery, genetic diagnostics, and the development of cost-effective Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). During a recent meeting, the Minister reviewed the achievements of these laboratories, emphasizing the support provided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the past decade to enhance scientific research and innovation in India.
Key Contributions of CSIR Institutes
Directors from three leading CSIR laboratories in HyderabadโCSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT), CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (CSIR-NGRI), and CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CSIR-CCMB)โattended the meeting. They presented their recent accomplishments and strategic contributions to science and technology. Dr. D. Srinivasa Reddy, Director of CSIR-IICT, highlighted the institute’s advancements in the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors, including the development of safer agrochemicals and novel catalysts for industrial processes.
Among CSIR-IICT’s notable achievements is the creation of compostable plastics in collaboration with GreenWorksBio and the development of Hydrazine Hydrate with Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited (GACL). The institute has also pioneered sustainable technologies, such as the Anaerobic Gas Lift Reactor (AGR), which efficiently converts biodegradable waste into biogas and bio-manure, showcasing its commitment to environmental sustainability.
Innovations in Molecular Biology and Diagnostics
Dr. Vinay Nandicoori, Director of CSIR-CCMB, elaborated on the institute’s groundbreaking work in molecular biology and genetic diagnostics. He noted that CCMB was the first Indian institution to develop DNA fingerprinting technology, which has significantly impacted forensic investigations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the institute quickly developed indigenous diagnostic kits and advanced mRNA vaccine technologies.
One of CCMB’s most significant initiatives is its work on sickle cell anemia, where it created a low-cost diagnostic kit as part of the National Sickle Cell Elimination Mission. The institute is also involved in research on diseases like tuberculosis and encephalitis and has established India’s first rare disease registry to understand the genetic basis of uncommon disorders. Through its Atal Incubation Centre (AIC-CCMB), the institute has supported over 160 startups focused on biotech innovations in healthcare, agriculture, and environmental sustainability.
Advancements in Earth Sciences
Dr. Prakash Kumar, Director of CSIR-NGRI, presented the institute’s achievements in earth sciences, particularly in seismic hazard mapping and resource exploration. He highlighted the development of India’s first strain map to assess earthquake vulnerability in the Himalayan and Indo-Gangetic regions, which is crucial for national disaster preparedness. NGRI is also conducting deep seismic profiling to decode the crustal structure of central India, which has implications for both tectonic studies and mineral exploration.
Furthermore, NGRI’s research on geothermal energy in regions like Ladakh and Chhattisgarh is paving the way for clean and renewable energy solutions. Dr. Jitendra Singh commended the vital role of CSIR laboratories in driving scientific innovation and contributing to India’s goal of becoming a self-reliant knowledge economy.
Upcoming CSIR Startup Conclave
In recognition of the contributions made by these institutes, a CSIR Startup Conclave is set to take place in Hyderabad on April 22โ23, 2025. This event aims to foster collaboration between research institutions and startups, promoting entrepreneurship in India. The conclave will be jointly organized by CSIR-IICT, CSIR-NGRI, and CSIR-CCMB.
