Hindustani Bhau Takes Legal Action Against Farah Khan

Social media influencer and former Bigg Boss contestant Vikas Jayram Fhatak, popularly known as Hindustani Bhau, has filed a petition with the Bombay High Court seeking to register a First Information Report (FIR) against Bollywood director and choreographer Farah Khan. The legal action stems from Khan’s controversial remarks about the Holi festival during a February 2025 episode of Celebrity MasterChef, which Fhatak claims were derogatory and hurtful to the Hindu community.

Controversial Remarks Spark Outrage

The incident occurred on February 20, when Farah Khan allegedly referred to Holi as โ€œa festival for the Chhapris,โ€ a term that Hindustani Bhau argues carries negative connotations. In his petition, he asserts that the comment undermines the cultural significance of Holi, a festival celebrated by millions as a symbol of joy and unity. Fhatak contends that such remarks can incite communal unrest and hurt the sentiments of the Hindu community.

Following the broadcast, Fhatak filed a formal complaint with the Khar Police Station on February 21, urging them to take action against Khan. Despite escalating his complaint to higher police authorities, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police, he claims that no action has been taken, and the police have yet to register an FIR. This lack of response has prompted Fhatak to seek judicial intervention.

Legal Grounds for the Petition

In his petition, filed through advocate Ali Kaashif Khan-Deshmukh, Fhatak emphasizes that Holi represents the triumph of good over evil and is a time for celebration. He argues that Khan’s remarks not only insult the cultural and religious sentiments of Hindus but also set a troubling precedent for public figures making derogatory statements without facing consequences. Fhatak warns that such comments could lead to public protests and social unrest, undermining the peace within society. Fhatak’s petition references the Supreme Court’s ruling in Lalita Kumari v. Government of Uttar Pradesh & Ors (2014), which mandates that an FIR must be registered if the information provided indicates a cognizable offense. He asserts that his complaint clearly outlines a cognizable offense, making it legally obligatory for the police to act.

Public Reaction and Media Coverage

The controversy surrounding Farah Khan’s remarks has garnered significant media attention, with outlets like Firstpost reporting on the public outrage that followed. Many individuals within the Hindu community have expressed their discontent, feeling that Khan’s comments were not only disrespectful but also potentially harmful to communal harmony. The incident has sparked discussions on social media, with users voicing their opinions on the implications of such statements made by celebrities. As the legal proceedings unfold, the case highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding freedom of speech and the responsibilities of public figures in their expressions. Hindustani Bhau’s actions reflect a growing sentiment among some community members who demand accountability for remarks perceived as offensive, especially regarding cultural and religious sensitivities.
