The WAVES 2025 Summit in Mumbai reached new heights on its third day with a session titled โ€œTaking Indian Music to New Heights.โ€ This event gathered influential figures from the music industry to discuss the global ascent of Indian music and the potential opportunities that lie ahead. The panel featured prominent artists and executives who shared their insights on artist development, digital growth, and the importance of quality music in connecting with audiences.

Insights from Industry Leaders

The session showcased a diverse array of perspectives from respected names in both the Indian and international music scenes. Himesh Reshammiya, a celebrated Bollywood composer and singer, highlighted the significance of preparation for emerging artists. He urged newcomers to maintain a polished music portfolio, reflecting on his own journey where opportunities were limited. Reshammiya emphasized that todayโ€™s artists can utilize independent platforms and social media to showcase their talents, but the quality of their music remains paramount for making a lasting impact.

Tiang also stressed the necessity for a sustainable and value-driven music consumption culture in India, which is crucial for the industry’s growth.

Challenges and Opportunities in Music Monetization

Dr. Richard Gooch, Chief Technology Officer at the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), addressed the role of data-driven strategies in promoting and protecting Indian music on international platforms. He underscored the importance of global standards in safeguarding artists’ rights and ensuring fair compensation in the digital age.

Dinraj Shetty, an executive at Sony Music Publishing, shared valuable insights on music rights management. He explained how Indian songwriters and composers can better monetize their work in the streaming era. Meanwhile, Vikram Mehra, Managing Director of Saregama, emphasized the need for mutual respect between artists and music labels. He pointed out that both parties play essential roles in the industry, advocating for a robust subscription-based market and stricter measures against piracy, which has adversely affected the music sector.

Future Prospects for Indian Music

Jay Mehta, Managing Director of Warner Music India, expressed his vision for the future of the Indian music industry. He noted the disparity between India’s rapid economic growth and the stagnant development of its music sector. Despite these challenges, Mehta remains optimistic, stating that Indian consumers are willing to pay for high-quality content. He highlighted the importance of discovering new talent and promoting genre diversity to strengthen connections between Indian and global music scenes.

Fernandes, a key figure in policy and regulation, provided a macroeconomic overview of India’s music industry. He advocated for stronger frameworks and digital innovation to protect artists’ rights and promote growth. The session was expertly moderated by Scott De Mercado, a respected music entrepreneur, who emphasized the need for an ecosystem that supports and empowers artists, recognizing them as the true heroes of the industry.
