Future Warfare Will Involve Algorithms, Autonomous Systems, and AI

The landscape of warfare is evolving, with technology taking center stage in future conflicts, according to Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Speaking at the ‘Raksha Navachar Samvaad: Interaction with iDEX Startups’ event on October 7, 2025, he emphasized the importance of innovation in defense, urging startups to create groundbreaking technologies. Singh highlighted the significant increase in domestic defense acquisitions and called for a shift from imitation to innovation, aiming to position India as a global leader in defense technology.

Embracing Technological Advancements

During his address, Rajnath Singh outlined the changing nature of warfare, where algorithms, autonomous systems, and artificial intelligence will play pivotal roles. He referenced the recent Operation Sindoor as a demonstration of these advancements. Singh encouraged innovators to move beyond current solutions and strive to redefine the future of warfare. He stated, “We must not remain imitators or followers in technology; we must become the creators and standard-setters for the world.” This call to action aims to inspire Indian startups to lead in defense innovation, ensuring that the nation is not just a consumer of technology but a creator of it.

Progress in Indigenous Defense Production

Rajnath Singh highlighted the remarkable growth in indigenous defense production, noting that domestic acquisitions have surged from ₹74,000 crore in 2021-22 to ₹1.2 lakh crore in 2024-25. He described this shift as a transformation in mindset, moving from dependence to confidence in domestic capabilities. The Minister also pointed out that the government has reserved at least 25% of annual procurement for Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs), with over 350 items designated exclusively for them. This initiative reflects a broader movement towards self-reliance in defense, which Singh asserts is now a reality rather than just a slogan.

Encouraging Startups and Innovation

Singh urged startups to aim higher, noting that while India boasts over 100 unicorns, none are in the defense sector. He expressed a desire for the first Indian Defense Unicorn to emerge from the current crop of innovators, emphasizing that such a milestone would be a source of national pride. He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting startups throughout their journey, from ideation to implementation. The Minister praised the achievements of iDEX winners, who have contributed to record-breaking defense production and exports, reinforcing the notion that innovation is key to realizing a self-reliant India.

Strengthening the Defense Innovation Ecosystem

The Minister also discussed the government’s efforts to bolster the defense innovation ecosystem through various initiatives. He mentioned reforms in the Defense Procurement Manual and the ongoing simplification of the Defense Acquisition Procedure to provide stability and predictability for innovators. Singh emphasized the importance of creating a comprehensive framework that encourages and supports innovation, aiming to position India as a global defense innovator. He concluded by highlighting the collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Defence and various departments to ensure that every innovative idea has the potential to evolve into a viable product, ultimately enhancing India’s defense preparedness.
