Faces Significant Selloff, Dropping from India’s Top 10 Most Valued Companies

Infosys, once a stalwart of investor confidence, is facing significant challenges in the current market landscape. The IT giant has seen its market value plummet by over Rs 2 lakh crore, resulting in its exit from India’s top 10 most valued companies. Following a disappointing quarterly update, Infosys’s stock dropped nearly 7% in a single day, contributing to a year-to-date decline of approximately 30%. Despite reporting a solid revenue increase in the last quarter, the company’s cautious outlook for the upcoming fiscal year has raised concerns among investors.

Market Reaction and Financial Performance

Infosys’s recent financial performance has been a mixed bag. In the March quarter, the company reported a 13% year-on-year revenue increase, reaching Rs 46,402 crore. Additionally, its net profit of Rs 8,501 crore exceeded market expectations. However, the company’s forecast for FY27, which predicts a modest constant currency revenue growth of only 1.5% to 3.5%, has disappointed investors. This outlook has sparked fears of slower growth in the future, leading to a significant selloff in the stock market. Currently, Infosys’s market capitalization stands at around Rs 4.9 lakh crore, a stark contrast to its previous standing as a key blue-chip player in the Nifty index.

Industry Trends and Changing Demand

Analysts attribute the pressure on Infosys to broader shifts within the IT industry. According to Axis Securities, clients are increasingly focused on cost-cutting and vendor consolidation, leading to weak discretionary spending. The brokerage noted that demand across various sectors remains muted, with clients prioritizing resilience and cost efficiency over expansion. As a result, large transformation projects are slowing down, while interest in artificial intelligence (AI) and automation is on the rise. Infosys is responding to this trend by enhancing its AI capabilities through its Topaz platform and forming partnerships with global technology firms. The company has over 30,000 developers working on productivity platforms, which are expected to create new opportunities in data, cloud, and automation-led services.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

Despite the challenges posed by AI, which is leading to deflation in core business areas, there are still positive signs for Infosys. The company secured contracts worth $14.9 billion in FY26, marking a 24% increase year-on-year, with more than half of these being new deals. This indicates that clients continue to invest in long-term projects, even if the execution timelines are extended. However, analysts caution that demand remains uneven across sectors. While financial services and energy sectors are performing well due to ongoing investments and outsourcing, industries such as manufacturing, retail, and telecom are exhibiting caution amid macroeconomic uncertainties and weak consumer demand.

Future Outlook and Analyst Perspectives

Looking ahead, Elara Securities has maintained a cautiously optimistic view on Infosys, citing improved visibility on client behavior as the company approaches FY27. The brokerage has noted enhancements in revenue per employee and EBITDA per employee, suggesting better operational efficiency. However, it has also adjusted its earnings estimates and lowered its price target in light of the softer growth outlook. As Infosys navigates these turbulent waters, the company will need to adapt to the evolving demands of the IT landscape while addressing investor concerns about its growth trajectory.
