England All-Rounder Critiques Brendon McCullum, Shares ‘Eye-Opening Experience’
Liam Livingstone has voiced his frustrations with the England cricket team’s management after being dropped from the national squad in 2025. The all-rounder expressed feelings of disrespect and a lack of communication, revealing he has not been part of the setup since March of last year. Livingstone is uncertain about his future with the team under the current leadership, particularly after receiving minimal feedback regarding his exclusion from the West Indies series.
Frustration with England Management
Livingstone’s discontent stems from a brief conversation he had with head coach Brendon McCullum, who informed him of his exclusion from the squad. The call lasted less than a minute, leaving Livingstone seeking clarity on the decision. He recounted, “I asked why [I was dropped]. They said they wanted to try someone else.” He noted that outgoing selector Luke Wright did not reach out to him, and the only communication he received from captain Harry Brook was a text message. Livingstone also criticized England’s managing director, Rob Key, for failing to communicate with him after the decision. He recalled, “Keysy [Rob Key] said nothing. I actually rang him one day, and he said he was busy at a Test camp at Loughborough.” This lack of communication has left Livingstone feeling sidelined, stating, “if you’re in, you’re in, and if you’re not in, no one cares about you.”
Struggles with Role in the Team
Livingstone shared his struggles with finding his place in the England team, particularly during the 2025 tour of India. He sought guidance from McCullum when he was experiencing a dip in form but felt the advice he received was inadequate. “I was asking for help, and pretty much all I got was that I care too much and I need to chill out a little bit,” he explained. Livingstone expressed that caring about performance is natural, especially when results are not favorable. Another point of contention for him was the frequent changes in his batting position. He noted that whenever he was promoted in the order, he performed well, but he was often pushed back down to No. 7 when more established players returned. Livingstone remarked, “I don’t want to be someone that’s a sixth bowler and batting at No. 7. I feel like it’s a waste of my talent.”
Looking Ahead to the IPL
As he prepares for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season with Sunrisers Hyderabad, Livingstone reflected on his exclusion from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Surprisingly, he stated, “I didn’t miss it one bit,” indicating that he felt no regret about not being part of the tournament. Instead, he is focused on making a significant impact in the IPL to potentially reignite his international career. Livingstone hopes to replicate his successful debut season with Punjab Kings in 2022, where he played a pivotal role in winning matches from the No. 4 position. He acknowledged the unique challenges of the IPL, saying, “it’s a long time away from home – but if you give it everything you’ve got, it can repay you very nicely.” Livingstone’s ambition is clear: a strong performance in the IPL could open doors for a return to the England squad.
