Embraer Aims for 200 Jet Orders as Part of ‘Make in India’ Initiative

Getting firm orders for over 200 aircraft from Indian airlines is crucial for Embraer to establish a final assembly line (FAL) in India for commercial fixed-wing aircraft. The Brazilian aerospace giant, which recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Adani Group, is exploring the possibility of starting with a “completion centre” to modify and deliver aircraft from Brazil. Embraer’s president and CEO, Francisco Gomes Neto, emphasized the growing demand for regional jets in India, citing the country’s expanding aviation market and infrastructure.

Plans for Final Assembly Line

Embraer is keen on setting up a final assembly line in India, contingent on securing firm orders for at least 200 regional jets. Gomes Neto highlighted that India, being the fastest-growing aviation market globally, will require around 500 regional jets in the coming years. He stated that if the company receives the necessary orders this year, the assembly line could be operational by 2028. The proposed facility aims to cater to the increasing demand for regional air travel, bolstered by initiatives like Prime Minister Modi’s UDAN scheme, which promotes regional connectivity.

Engagement with Indian Aviation Leaders

To facilitate the order acquisition process, Gomes Neto is scheduled to meet with key executives from major Indian airlines, including Tata Group’s Air India and IndiGo. The discussions will focus on the potential for Embraer’s 76-88 seater E175 regional jets, which are designed for short to medium-haul flights. Currently, there are eight E175 jets in operation with Star Air and one in the Reliance Industries fleet. The Adani Group is actively searching for suitable locations for the assembly line, with Dholera in Gujarat emerging as a leading candidate.

Building a Local Supply Chain

In preparation for the assembly line, Embraer has been working for the past year and a half to establish a local supply chain in India. Gomes Neto mentioned that the company has already partnered with over 15 suppliers in the country. Recently, Embraer signed a memorandum of understanding with Hindalco to explore opportunities in manufacturing aerospace-grade aluminum, further solidifying its commitment to the “Make in India” initiative. This local sourcing strategy aims to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of the production process.

Future Aspirations and Ecosystem Development

Beyond the assembly line, Embraer plans to create a comprehensive ecosystem in India, which will include maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services, pilot training, and full flight simulator facilities. The company is also looking to establish MRO capabilities for its C-390 Millennium aircraft, contingent on its selection in the Indian Air Force’s medium transport aircraft program. Gomes Neto expressed confidence in the Indian market’s potential, stating that the establishment of a final assembly line would not only serve local needs but also cater to nearby markets.
