DGCA Conducts Review of Air India and Air India Express Operations

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) recently convened a high-level meeting with senior officials from Air India Ltd. and Air India Express, both of which operate over 1,000 flights daily across various domestic and international routes. The primary objective of the meeting was to assess the operational efficiency of these airlines and ensure adherence to safety and passenger service regulations. Key issues discussed included maintenance delays, airspace restrictions, passenger communication, and the status of the Boeing 787 fleet.

Addressing Maintenance-Related Delays

During the meeting, the DGCA expressed concerns regarding maintenance-related delays reported by Air India. The regulator emphasized the need for the airline to enhance internal coordination among its engineering, operations, and ground handling teams. This improvement is crucial to ensure the availability of necessary spare parts, which can help mitigate delays that affect passengers. The DGCA urged Air India to strictly comply with existing regulations to prevent further operational disruptions.

Impact of Airspace Restrictions

The meeting also addressed the recent airspace closures, particularly over Iranian airspace, which have resulted in flight diversions, delays, and cancellations. The DGCA instructed the airlines to improve communication with both passengers and crew members regarding these disruptions. Additionally, operators were encouraged to adopt alternative routing strategies to minimize the impact of such closures on their flight schedules.

Enhancing Passenger Information and Facilitation

Another critical point of discussion was the airlines’ obligation to keep passengers informed about delays and cancellations. The DGCA reminded Air India and Air India Express of their responsibilities under the Civil Aviation Requirements. The emphasis was placed on the importance of effective passenger facilitation and the timely dissemination of information through all available channels. This approach aims to enhance the overall travel experience for passengers and ensure they are well-informed about their flight statuses.

Monitoring the Boeing 787 Fleet

The DGCA conducted a recent surveillance of Air Indiaโ€™s Boeing 787 fleet, which revealed no significant safety concerns. The aircraft and their maintenance systems were found to comply with current safety standards. Furthermore, the status of the “Enhanced Safety Inspection” for the B787-8/9 fleet was reviewed, with 24 out of 33 aircraft having completed the required checks. The regulator noted that ongoing checks would continue to ensure the fleet’s operational readiness and safety.
