Controversy Over Salman Ali Agha’s Runout: Did Umpires Miss a Dead Ball Call? MCC Weighs In

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has confirmed that the controversial run-out of Pakistan’s Salman Ali Agha during the recent ODI match against Bangladesh was in accordance with the Laws of Cricket. The incident occurred when Agha, backing up at the non-striker’s end, attempted to pick up the ball after it deflected off his pads. The MCC emphasized that Agha was out of his ground when the wicket was broken, and the ball was still in play, making the dismissal valid.

Clarification from the MCC

The MCC released a statement addressing the contentious run-out incident that took place during the second ODI between Bangladesh and Pakistan. They stated that both on-field umpires acted correctly under the Laws of Cricket. According to the MCC, Agha was clearly outside his crease when the wicket was broken, which justified the run-out decision. The statement also highlighted that the non-striker had left his ground while the ball was in play and was attempting to return when he collided with Bangladesh’s Mehidy Hasan Miraz. The MCC pointed out that players should not attempt to pick up the ball without the fielding side’s consent, as this could lead to an Obstructing the Field dismissal.

Details of the Incident

The incident unfolded in the 39th over of Pakistan’s innings, where Agha and Mohammad Rizwan had formed a solid partnership, adding 109 runs for the fourth wicket. On the fourth delivery of the over, Rizwan played a gentle shot that rolled towards Agha, who was positioned outside his crease. As the ball made contact with his pads, Agha bent down to retrieve it. However, Miraz quickly collected the ball and broke the stumps while Agha was still outside the crease, prompting an appeal for a run-out. The on-field umpire upheld the appeal, and the third umpire confirmed the decision, leading to Agha’s dismissal.

Agha’s Reaction and Further Clarifications

Following the dismissal, Salman Ali Agha displayed visible frustration as he made his way back to the pavilion. Visuals captured his displeasure, reflecting the emotional impact of the controversial decision. In response to suggestions that the ball should have been declared dead, the MCC clarified that such a ruling was not feasible under the Laws. They explained that the ball does not become dead simply due to player collisions, as this could encourage players to seek out collisions for strategic advantages. The MCC concluded that there was no indication of serious injury, and since Mehidy believed the ball was live, the umpires acted appropriately in allowing the play to continue.
