Charles Émile Picard: Pioneer of Complex Analysis

Charles Émile Picard (24 July 1856 – 11 December 1941) was a French mathematician. He was elected to the Académie française in 1924 and made fundamental contributions to complex analysis and the theory of differential equations that shaped modern mathematics.

Early Life and Education

Picard was born in Paris on 24 July 1856. He attended the Lycée Henri-IV in Paris before studying mathematics at the École Normale Supérieure.

Career and Achievements

Picard’s mathematical output ranged widely across pure and applied domains. His work in complex analysis produced two theorems bearing his name. Picard’s little theorem establishes that every nonconstant entire function takes every value in the complex plane except possibly one. His great theorem extends this principle to analytic functions with essential singularities, showing they take every value infinitely often, with perhaps one exception, in any neighborhood of the singularity.

Beyond these central results, Picard contributed significantly to differential equation theory, developing Picard–Vessiot theory and studying Painlevé transcendents. He introduced a symmetry group concept for linear differential equations and defined the Picard group in algebraic surface theory, which classifies algebraic curves on a surface modulo linear equivalence. His engagement with function theory led him to adopt emerging ideas from algebraic topology early in their development. Applied mathematics also occupied his attention; he worked on theories of telegraphy and elasticity.

Picard’s pedagogical influence was substantial. Like Henri PoincarĂ©, he was deeply invested in training students in mathematics, physics, and engineering. He authored a classic textbook on analysis and produced one of the first textbooks on relativity theory. His popular writings included biographical essays on leading French mathematicians, among them his father-in-law Charles Hermite.

Notable Events and Milestones

In 1881, Picard married Marie, daughter of Charles Hermite. Louis Couturat attended Picard’s integral calculus lectures in 1891–1892, recording detailed notes that survive in three cahiers now held at Internet Archive. Picard was elected the fifteenth member of seat 1 at the AcadĂ©mie française in 1924. In 1930, he became a founder of the Society of Friends of AndrĂ©-Marie Ampère, an organization established to create France’s first science museum, the Ampère Museum near Lyon.

Awards and Honors

Picard held international recognition throughout his career. He was an International Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, an International Member of the United States National Academy of Sciences, and an International Member of the American Philosophical Society.
