Celebrating Carnatic Music: Krishnaveni Sangeetha Neerajanam Festival
The 2nd Edition of the Krishnaveni Sangeetha Neerajanam Music Festival kicked off today at the Tummalapalli Kshetrayya Kalakshetra Auditorium in Vijayawada. This grand event attracted a host of dignitaries, including Shri Suresh Gopi, the Minister of State for Tourism, who served as the Chief Guest. Other notable attendees included Shri Kandula Durgesh, Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Cinematography of Andhra Pradesh, and Smt. P. Tejaswi, Chairperson of the Andhra Pradesh State Creativity & Culture Commission. The festival aims to celebrate the rich legacy of Carnatic music and promote cultural tourism in the region.
A Three-Day Musical Extravaganza
The festival spans three days and takes place across three iconic locations in Vijayawada. It features over 140 talented artists and showcases 35 mesmerizing programs. Each performance is a tribute to the rich heritage of Carnatic music, which has deep roots in Telugu culture. The festival not only highlights the musical talents of the region but also serves as a platform for cultural exchange and appreciation.
During his keynote address, Shri Suresh Gopi emphasized the festival’s role in honoring the contributions of legendary composers like Tyagaraja, Annamacharya, and Ramadasa. He noted that their works continue to resonate not just in India but across the globe. The Minister praised the festival as a pioneering model for “Music Tourism,” which integrates cultural preservation with tourism promotion. He also highlighted the prequel events held at spiritual and heritage sites in Andhra Pradesh, which have helped bring Carnatic music closer to local communities and smaller towns.
Government Support for Cultural Preservation
Shri Suresh Gopi further emphasized the importance of the guru-shishya parampara, or teacher-student tradition, in preserving the authenticity of Carnatic music. He expressed a vision to expand similar festivals to other Southern states, particularly Kerala, to honor their contributions to classical music. The Minister reaffirmed the Government of Indiaโs commitment to cultural preservation, citing Prime Minister Narendra Modiโs vision of promoting Indian heritage on a global scale. He credited Union Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman for her pivotal role in conceptualizing the festival, which blends culture and tourism into a sustainable platform for celebrating classical arts.
Shri Kandula Durgesh, the Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Cinematography, also praised the festival. He described it as a magnificent platform to showcase Andhra Pradeshโs cultural heritage. The Minister announced plans to preserve the legacies of great composers and to honor artistic luminaries. He assured that steps would be taken to address the challenges faced by artists, including plans for appointing a Chairman for the Dance Academy in Andhra Pradesh.
A Holistic Cultural Experience
The Krishnaveni Sangeetha Neerajanam Festival goes beyond music to offer a holistic cultural experience. One of the key highlights is the showcase of GI-tagged handicrafts and handlooms from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. This initiative, presented by the Development Commissioner for Handicrafts and the Development Commissioner for Handlooms, celebrates the artisan heritage of the region. Visitors have the opportunity to appreciate the craftsmanship that defines the stateโs cultural identity.
Additionally, the Indian Culinary Institute (ICI) from Tirupati has contributed significantly by highlighting the culinary traditions of Andhra Pradesh. A dedicated food stall serves authentic regional delicacies, allowing festival-goers to savor the stateโs gastronomic legacy. This initiative enriches the cultural narrative of the event and underscores the deep connection between cuisine and cultural identity. By weaving together music, crafts, and cuisine, the festival creates a vibrant tapestry of Andhra Pradeshโs tangible and intangible heritage.
The Krishnaveni Sangeetha Neerajanam Festival is not just an event; it is a celebration of the spiritual and artistic essence of the Telugu-speaking region. For updates and the complete program schedule, visit Krishnaveni Music Festival.
