Can AI Text Alerts Play a Role in Protecting Endangered Snow Leopards?

Snow leopards, often referred to as the “ghosts of the mountains,” face significant threats to their survival, particularly in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region. With an estimated global population of only 4,000 to 6,000, these majestic creatures are increasingly at risk due to human-wildlife conflict and habitat loss. Innovative conservation efforts, including the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, aim to protect both the snow leopards and the livelihoods of local farmers who often find themselves in conflict with these predators.

Conservation Challenges in Gilgit-Baltistan

The snow leopard population has seen a worrying decline of about 20% over the past two decades, with annual fatalities ranging from 221 to 450, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). A significant portion of these deaths occurs as a result of retaliatory killings by farmers who lose livestock to these predators. In Pakistan, where approximately 300 snow leopards reside, the conflict between wildlife and agriculture is particularly pronounced. Tehzeeb Hussain, a caretaker of an orphaned snow leopard named Lovely, emphasizes the challenges of releasing her back into the wild due to her inability to hunt. “If we release her, she would just go attack a farmer’s sheep and get killed,” he explains. This highlights the delicate balance between protecting endangered species and ensuring the safety and livelihoods of local communities.

Innovative AI Solutions for Wildlife Protection

In response to the ongoing conflict, WWF, in collaboration with Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), has developed AI-powered cameras designed to detect the presence of snow leopards. These cameras send alerts to villagers via text message, advising them to move their livestock to safer areas. Positioned at high altitudes in rugged terrain, these cameras are equipped with solar panels and lithium batteries to withstand harsh weather conditions. Asif Iqbal, a conservationist with WWF Pakistan, is optimistic about the technology’s potential. “The AI software can differentiate between humans, other animals, and snow leopards,” he notes. The project is currently testing ten cameras across three villages, with the aim of refining the AI model for improved accuracy.

Community Engagement and Resistance

Despite the technological advancements, gaining the trust and cooperation of local communities has proven challenging. Initial skepticism led to instances of vandalism, such as cut wires and blankets thrown over the cameras. The WWF team has had to navigate cultural sensitivities, particularly regarding women’s privacy, which necessitated relocating some cameras. While some villagers have begun to recognize the ecological importance of snow leopards, others remain unconvinced. Sitara, a local farmer, lost all her sheep to a snow leopard and expressed doubt about the effectiveness of the AI cameras, citing poor mobile service in the area. “My phone barely gets any service during the day; how can a text help?” she questioned.

The Road Ahead for Snow Leopard Conservation

The WWF acknowledges that while legal penalties have deterred poaching, such as the jailing of three men for killing a snow leopard in 2020, the solution to the conflict between humans and wildlife requires a multifaceted approach. In addition to the AI cameras, the organization plans to trial various deterrents, including smells, sounds, and lights, to keep snow leopards away from livestock. The ongoing efforts to track and protect these elusive animals are crucial, as they play an essential role in maintaining the balance of their ecosystem by controlling populations of prey species like ibex and blue sheep. As conservationists continue their work, the future of the snow leopard hangs in the balance, dependent on both innovative technology and community cooperation.
