Dhan Singh Thapa (28 April 1928 – 6 September 2005) was an Indian Army officer and recipient of the Param Vir Chakra.
Life and Career
Dhan Singh Thapa was born on 28 April 1928, in Shimla.
Thapa served in the 8th Gorkha Rifles, a regiment known for its bravery and contributions to the Indian Army. His military career saw active duty in various challenging situations, and he displayed exceptional courage and leadership skills.
Dhan Singh Thapa’s moment of extreme valor came during the 1962 Sino-Indian War. He was serving as a Major in the 1st Battalion of the 8th Gorkha Rifles. In the harsh and treacherous terrain of the Rezang La pass in Ladakh, his battalion faced a fierce Chinese assault. The Chinese forces outnumbered the Indian troops significantly.
Despite being heavily outnumbered and facing adverse weather conditions, Major Thapa displayed exemplary leadership and courage. He led his men with determination, repelling wave after wave of enemy attacks. Even when wounded, he continued to inspire and guide his troops.
Tragically, during the intense battle, Major Dhan Singh Thapa was captured by the Chinese forces. He endured captivity for over seven months under extremely challenging conditions. Despite the hardships, he maintained his dignity and resilience.
After his release, Major Dhan Singh Thapa returned to India, having endured significant physical and mental hardships. His unwavering spirit and sacrifice during the war earned him the Param Vir Chakra, which was posthumously awarded.
He passed away on 6 September 2005, in Pune.
