Bangladesh Cricket Board Dismisses Ultimatum Allegations, Confirms ICC Support for T20 World Cup Participation

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has confirmed that it received a formal response from the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding its concerns about the safety and security of the national team during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in India. The BCB emphasized that no ultimatum was issued by the ICC, which reiterated its commitment to ensuring Bangladesh’s full participation in the tournament. The ICC expressed its willingness to collaborate with the BCB to address the raised concerns and incorporate the board’s input into the security planning for the event.

BCB’s Communication with ICC

In a detailed statement, the BCB outlined the contents of its communication with the ICC. The global governing body reassured the BCB of its commitment to facilitating the Bangladesh team’s participation in the T20 World Cup. The ICC has expressed readiness to work closely with the BCB to address any security concerns. The BCB highlighted that reports suggesting an ultimatum from the ICC were completely unfounded and did not accurately reflect the nature of their discussions. The board emphasized its dedication to prioritizing the safety and well-being of the national team.

The BCB’s concerns were raised during an online meeting with ICC officials, where it was clarified that no actionable security inputs had been received that would necessitate relocating Bangladesh’s matches from India. The ICC currently sees no reason to change the tournament venues, which is a significant point for the BCB as it prepares for the upcoming matches.

Upcoming Matches for Bangladesh

Bangladesh is scheduled to compete in Group C of the T20 World Cup, with matches against West Indies, Italy, and England set to take place in Kolkata on February 7, 9, and 14, respectively. Following these games, the team will face Nepal in Mumbai on February 17. The BCB had previously sought to relocate these matches to ensure the safety of players and officials, especially in light of recent events involving the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The BCB’s request for relocation stemmed from concerns about player safety, particularly after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) directed Kolkata Knight Riders to release Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL. This decision led to the BCB banning IPL broadcasts in Bangladesh, and Mustafizur has since signed with the Pakistan Super League.

Clarification on Media Reports

Following the ICC-BCB meeting, conflicting media reports emerged, with some suggesting that Bangladesh was told to travel to India or risk forfeiting points. The BCB has categorically denied these claims, asserting that they do not reflect the discussions held with the ICC. No official statements have been released by either the ICC or the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding the outcomes of the meeting.

The BCB remains committed to maintaining open lines of communication with the ICC and relevant authorities to ensure a smooth and successful participation in the T20 World Cup. The board’s focus continues to be on the safety and security of the Bangladesh National Cricket Team as they prepare for the challenges ahead in the tournament.
