AIIMS Raipur Completes First Swap Kidney Transplant

Under the guidance of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, AIIMS Raipur has achieved a significant milestone by performing its first Swap Kidney Transplant, also known as a Kidney Paired Transplant (KPT). This groundbreaking procedure marks AIIMS Raipur as the first among the newer AIIMS institutions and the first government hospital in Chhattisgarh to undertake such a complex and life-saving operation. The successful transplant highlights the institute’s dedication to enhancing healthcare and offering innovative solutions for patients suffering from end-stage kidney disease.
Understanding Swap Kidney Transplant
A Swap Kidney Transplant allows patients with renal failure to receive compatible kidneys through a unique exchange system. In this process, a patient who has a willing living donor but faces incompatibilityโwhether due to blood type or the presence of HLA antibodiesโcan swap donors with another incompatible pair. This arrangement ensures that both recipients receive kidneys that are compatible with their blood types, leading to successful transplants for both pairs. The National Organisation and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) has recognized the potential of Swap Kidney Transplants to increase the number of successful transplants by approximately 15%. They have recommended implementing this method across all states and Union Territories, aiming to establish a uniform “one nation, one swap transplant programme” to streamline the process nationwide.
The Landmark Case at AIIMS Raipur
In a landmark case at AIIMS Raipur, two male patients from Bilaspur, aged 39 and 41, had been undergoing dialysis for three years and were advised to seek kidney transplants. Their wives volunteered to be living donors; however, blood group incompatibility posed a challenge. One pair had blood types B+ and O+, while the other had O+ and B+. To resolve this issue, the transplant team at AIIMS Raipur coordinated a successful swap transplant. Each donor provided a kidney to the other recipient, ensuring compatibility and enabling both patients to receive life-saving organs. The surgery took place on March 15, 2025, and all four individualsโboth donors and recipientsโare currently recovering well under close observation in the Transplant ICU. This achievement underscores AIIMS Raipur’s growing capabilities in advanced medical care and its commitment to innovative solutions for chronic kidney disease patients.
AIIMS Raipur’s Contributions to Organ Transplantation
AIIMS Raipur has played a crucial role in advancing organ transplantation in Chhattisgarh. The institute has established a comprehensive renal transplant program that includes both living and deceased donor transplants. Over the past two years, six deceased donors have contributed their organs, showcasing the institute’s commitment to organ donation. AIIMS Raipur was also the first among the newer AIIMS to initiate Deceased Donor Organ Donation and Deceased Donor Kidney Transplantation. Additionally, it is the first in the state to perform Deceased Donor Paediatric Kidney Transplantation. To date, the institute has successfully conducted 54 kidney transplants, boasting a graft survival rate of 95% and a patient survival rate of 97%. These statistics reflect AIIMS Raipur’s clinical excellence and dedication to providing high-quality patient care.
