Adidas Stock Declines Amid Uncertain 2026 Forecast and Middle East Conflict Impact
German sportswear giant Adidas experienced a significant drop in its stock value on Wednesday, following the release of a disappointing outlook for 2026. The company warned that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East could further complicate its business operations. Despite projecting an increase in operating profit, Adidas shares fell approximately eight percent on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, reflecting a broader trend of decline in recent months.
Adidas’ Financial Forecast and Market Reaction
Adidas has forecasted an operating profit of 2.3 billion euros (approximately $2.7 billion) for 2026. However, this projection comes with a caveat: the company anticipates a 400-million-euro impact from U.S. tariffs and adverse currency fluctuations. Following the announcement, shares plummeted to around 137 euros, marking an eight percent decrease. Deutsche Bank noted that the company’s guidance for operating income and profit margins was “slightly weaker than expected,” contributing to investor concerns.
Impact of the Middle East Conflict
The escalating conflict in the Middle East has introduced a layer of uncertainty for Adidas. The situation intensified following U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran, leading to retaliatory actions across the region. An Adidas franchise store in Israel was destroyed during an attack, although it was closed at the time, and no employees were harmed. Chief Executive Bjorn Gulden acknowledged that the conflict could have a “revenue impact” as store closures and disruptions to air freight routes may delay product deliveries. However, he emphasized that it is too early to fully assess the broader implications of the conflict on the company’s operations.
Challenges from Tariffs and Currency Fluctuations
Adidas has faced ongoing challenges due to tariffs imposed by the U.S. under the previous administration. Many of the company’s products are manufactured in Asian countries that are subject to these tariffs. Chief Financial Officer Harm Ohlymeyer stated that Adidas would not immediately pursue refunds following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that deemed many global duties illegal. He expressed caution, noting the unpredictability of future tariff decisions. Additionally, the strengthening euro against the U.S. dollar has reduced the value of Adidas’ overseas earnings, further complicating its financial outlook.
Strong Performance Amidst Uncertainty
Despite the cautious outlook for the coming years, Adidas reported strong financial results for 2025. The company saw a remarkable 75 percent increase in net income, reaching 1.34 billion euros, while sales rose by approximately five percent to 24.8 billion euros, driven by robust demand for footwear and apparel. In a show of confidence in leadership, Adidas extended Bjorn Gulden’s contract until 2030. Gulden took the helm in 2023 after the company ended its partnership with rapper Kanye West, who faced backlash for antisemitic remarks. This decision marked a significant shift for Adidas, which had previously collaborated with West on the popular Yeezy trainer line.
