Motilal Vora: A Lifetime of Leadership in Indian Politics
Motilal Vora (20 December 1928 – 21 December 2020), the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and the Governor of Uttar Pradesh.
Life and Career
He was born on 20 December 1928, in Rajasthan, India. He received his education in Raipur and Kolkata. For many years, he worked for several newspapers. Vora was a member of the Samajwadi Party in 1968. He joined INC in 1970 when he met Pt, Kishorilal Shukla, a member of the Congress party. In 1972, he was elected to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha). He was re-elected to Vidhan Sabha in 1977 and 1980. He was in charge of the Higher Education Department in Arjun Singh’s Cabinet. In 1983, he was appointed Cabinet Minister. From 1981 to 1984, he was Deputy Chairman of the Madhya Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation.
Vora became Madhya Pradesh’s Chief Minister on 13 March 1985. On 13 February 1988, he resigned as Chief Minister to join the Union Government. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha on 14 February 1988 and became the Minister of Health, Family Welfare, and Civil Aviation. He was a cabinet minister in the Indian government. In 1993, he was appointed Governor of Uttar Pradesh, and he held the job until 3 May 1996. He was a member of the 12th Lok Sabha from 1998-99.
Vora has been very close to the INC high command and supported Rahul Gandhi’s nomination for PM. In the 1980s, he was president of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee. Vora held key positions in the All-India Congress Committee (AICC), the Young Indians, and Associated Journals Limited (AJL) involved in the National Herald Case. On 22 March 2002, he became chairman and managing director of AJL. He was a 12% shareholder and director of Young Indian. He died on 21 December 2020, in New Delhi, India.
