Celebrating Indian Cinema Through Art
India has a rich and vibrant cinematic history, deeply intertwined with its culture and art. The visual representation of films through posters has always been a significant aspect of this connection. Recognizing the importance of this art form, the World Audio-Visual Entertainment Summit (WAVES) has launched the Film Poster Making Challenge as part of the ‘Create in India Challenge Season 1.’ This initiative is in collaboration with the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), the National Film Archive of India, the International Federation of Film Archives, and ImageNation Street Art. The competition aims to celebrate the artistic heritage of Indian film posters while encouraging contemporary interpretations. With 296 registrations already, the event is set to be a vibrant showcase of creativity and talent.
The inaugural WAVES Summit will take place from May 1-4, 2025, at the Jio World Convention Centre and Jio World Gardens in Mumbai. This summit serves as a unique platform for the convergence of the Media and Entertainment (M&E) sector, focusing on four key pillars: Broadcasting & Infotainment, AVGC-XR, Digital Media & Innovation, and Films. The Film Poster Making Challenge falls under the Films pillar, emphasizing the essence of Indian cinema and the craftsmanship behind iconic film posters.
Competition Categories and Registration Details
The Film Poster Making Competition features two distinct categories: Digital Posters and Hand-Painted Posters.
For the Digital Poster category, registration opened on October 1, 2023, and will remain open until March 15, 2025. Participants can register for free and select one film from a list of 20 titles to create their digital artwork. The submission must be made in a vertical orientation, with a resolution of 300 DPI in CMYK format, and can be uploaded as a JPEG or PNG file.
In contrast, the Hand-Painted Poster category is exclusive to selected art institutions. Institutions interested in participating can reach out via email to host the competition. Each institution will select three candidates to represent them in the semi-finals. The hand-painted posters must also be based on the same 20 film titles as the digital category. This structure ensures that the competition remains focused on showcasing the artistic talents of both individual artists and institutions.
Important Deadlines and Submission Guidelines
The timeline for the Film Poster Making Challenge is crucial for participants. For the Digital Poster category, all artworks must be submitted by March 15, 2025. The winners will be announced on April 1, 2025, followed by an exhibition and award ceremony in April 2025.
For the Hand-Painted Poster category, registration began on February 5, 2025, and will close on March 5, 2025. The live handmade poster-making competition will feature 25 selected artists who will create their artworks during the WAVES Summit. Participants must adhere to specific guidelines for their submissions. Digital artworks should be in a vertical format, with a maximum file size of 10 MB. Hand-painted posters must be created on suitable paper, with a size of 24 x 36 inches. These guidelines ensure that all entries meet the competition’s standards and can be showcased effectively.
Awards and Recognition for Outstanding Artistry
The Film Poster Making Challenge not only provides a platform for artists to showcase their creativity but also offers significant recognition for outstanding works. In the Digital Poster category, the top 20 selected artworks will be displayed at the WAVES Summit. Among these, the top three will receive prestigious awards, including cash prizes and digital certificates of appreciation.
For the Hand-Painted Poster category, the competition will culminate in a live event where selected artists will create their artworks in real-time. The top three hand-painted posters will also receive awards, with the first prize amounting to INR 50,000, the second prize at INR 30,000, and the third prize at INR 10,000. All participants will receive a Digital Certificate of Appreciation, ensuring that every artist’s effort is recognized.
