India Launches Special Stamps for Breast Cancer Awareness

The Department of Posts under the Ministry of Communications unveiled a unique souvenir sheet containing two commemorative postage stamps dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness at Dak Bhawan in New Delhi today. The event featured the presence of prominent officials, including Ms. Manisha Sinha, Director General Postal Services, and Ms. Punya Salila Srivastava, Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, along with other notable dignitaries. This initiative highlights the significant role of philately in enhancing public awareness and supporting critical national health issues.

Celebrating Women’s Health Through Philately

During her address, Ms. Manisha Sinha highlighted the power of commemorative postage stamps as a tool to exemplify the nation’s priorities and spread awareness on important health topics across regions. She emphasized the necessity of routine screening and early detection in the fight against breast cancer. Ms. Sinha urged families to back women in obtaining timely medical advice and pointed out how postcards can serve as a vehicle for emotional support and encouragement for those undergoing treatment.

Government Emphasizes Preventive Healthcare

Ms. Punya Salila Srivastava commended the Department of Posts for effectively conveying the message of women’s health through philately. She stressed the Government’s commitment to preventive healthcare, stating that regular screening for various types of cancers, including breast, oral, and cervical cancers, is a vital component of the national healthcare program. Moreover, she reiterated the significance of raising awareness and inspiring women to prioritize regular screening for early detection.

Addressing a National Concern

Breast cancer stands as the most prevalent cancer among women in India, with an alarming estimate of around two lakh new cases diagnosed each year. In response, the Government has enhanced efforts in population-based screening and early detection initiatives through the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases. Adequate screening services are accessible via Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and community health centres, with additional referral services and treatment options available at district and tertiary hospitals.

Awareness Drives Further Education

In a related effort, the Department of Posts, in partnership with Fortis Hospital, has organized various awareness sessions on Breast and Cervical Cancers. These interactive sessions also cover Basic Life Support (BLS) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) techniques at Dak Bhawan, aiming to promote a deeper understanding of preventive healthcare measures and crucial life-saving techniques.
